On Monday, December 9, Bartlett Sher will direct a one-night-only reunion concert of LCT’s Tony Award-winning 2008 production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific, starring original cast members Kelli O’Hara, Paulo Szot, Matthew Morrison, Danny Burstein, Loretta Ables Sayre, Sean Cullen, Victor Hawks, Li Jun Li, Skip Sudduth, and Noah Weisberg, and additional cast members to be announced. The concert will take place on the stage of the Vivian Beaumont Theater, followed by a cocktail party with the South Pacific company at the Metropolitan Opera House. The evening will support Lincoln Center Theater’s productions and education programs. Further details about the evening, including ticket prices, will be announced shortly. 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the musical.
It was glorious. They used the sliding walls from McNeal to do the orchestra reveal in the overture, akin to the receding stage in the 2008 production. Ted Sperling and the 30-piece orchestra (almost all of the original musicians!) sounded incredible. Kelli and Paulo were brilliant as ever and their performances still felt so lived-in. I’d love to see Loretta back on Broadway; seeing her perform again was thrilling. It was such an enjoyable evening from start to finish. Brought back so many good memories of being in that same theatre experiencing this superlative production for the first time.
It was wonderful. The cast sounded just as amazing as they did 15 year ago and I was impressed with how much of the staging they recreated (Kelli’s still cartwheeling!). I was definitely expecting more standing and reading lines/singing, so it was a lovely surprise to have the choreo and the costume changes.
I did think it was funny that when I turned my phone back on after the show I had an email from Telecharge asking for a review and whether or not I would recommend the show to someone. For the record, absolutely! Feel free to do this show again I’ll be there, Lincoln Center!
If the new regime ever wanted a cash grab, Kelli, Paolo, and Loretta are still close to age-appropriate for a few more years… (not that a massive production with a large cast & orchestra is a typical cash grab…)
I was there and echo how terrific it was. More staged than I expected. And for almost every person, it seemed like not a day had passed since 2008 and the performances were just as deep and settled and natural as they were then.
There was a funny moment. After Honey Bun, Billis has a line to Nellie "I'll be over here. If you need me, just sing out." Burstein paused for half a beat after "sing out" and added on "Louise". Got a huge laugh and round of applause.
