Stockard Channing was out this afternoon in "It's Only A Play."
Isabel Keating went on instead. There was no announcement made, no call board, instead a tiny
square of paper that said "At this performance Isabel Keating will Play Virginia whatever.
Lots of disappointed people this rainy afternoon!!!!!

How dare she do this to you? Doesn't she know who you are?

You should count yourself lucky. You got to see the facial expressions of the character.
I could see how this would upset patrons and out of towners, but Isabel Keating is such a treat to watch! I didn't know she was the stand by.

I saw Stockard’s understudy in Other Desert Cities a few years ago and I survived. I’m guessing you lived to tell the tale because you posted about it here.

I am sure people said this when Ms Victoria Clark was a replacement now look where she is?!!!
I saw Isabel Keating in The Boy From Oz and she was fantastic. Good for her!

She will be out today as well if anyone is curious
Does anyone know her address? We can go and drag her ass to the theater.

I understand Producer's frustration. Sounds like they hoped people wouldn't notice until the curtain went up and a different actress entered. I would've been bummed at first, but then excited to see Isabel though. I like Stockard, but I've seen her a few times now. Sorry you didn't get to see her!

To the OP: are you sure there wasn't a lobby board listing Channing's absence? The understudy board at the Schoenfeld is usually on the far left wall of the lobby, i.e., in a place that's not particularly noticeable when entering the theatre.

The producers are required to notify two of three possible ways that an understudy is on (the three ways being lobby board, playbill inserts, and pre-show announcement). If there truly wasn't anything besides an insert they could be in serious trouble with Equity.
The board was up yesterday as of 6pm stating that Stockard was out. Not sure how long it was up or if it was up for the matinee but it's really tiny. Only room for one name under the cast board.

Planned to try standing room today, then demurred upon learning Channing was out. But reading here that the wonderful Isabel Keating would be going on, I made a beeline for the box office. I'd take IK over SC any day.
Post-show edit: Keating was marvelous, as I knew she would be. Very funny and often touching.

"At $300- a ticket she should have been there!"
Huh? Regardless the price of the ticket, people get sick, people have emergencies. When you buy a ticket, it doesn't ever guarantee you will see all the people you want to see. I mean...
I assure you that Stockard is above the title, for reasons that confuse me, and you could have gotten your money back if you were that upset. But why get your money back when you can watch the show anyway and bitch about it afterwards!?
There are worse things she could do...than to miss a show...or two.
WHY would you pay three hundred bucks for any single ticket. Any actor can be out at any performance, which you know. It was not a personal slight.
actually, no one is above the title for this show. The marquee has only the play and McNally & O'brien's names are below title. The actors names are on the building above one entrance door in alpha order but not with the name of the play. So technically, there is no refund regardless of who is out.
I heard Channing was out today also...
Why would you pay $300 when you can get a great seat for $150 through Telecharge...
