I agree with RockyRoad. Sara will probably win it, but I don't think she is the best or really deserves it. Her role is limited and she sounds better and is more impressive on the CD than live.
I think she will unfortunately take it cause they got to give Spam something. It took the most noms, but it won't be winning the most awards or even a significant amount (I think Piazza will walk away with the most). It will most likely take Best Musical. Since none of the nominated men will win (yes..it's NLB), they will feel that they should give the show some "major" recognition besides Best Musical (it would also look rather dumb for them to give it Best Musical and then win no other major awards).
So..Sara wins by default. IS her's the best performance in the catagory. No. Not by a long run. Kelli deserves the award for giving a challenging, amazing performance and singing the crap out of a difficult score. I would even put Celia in the runner up spot.
Anyone know if Sara was in the show tonight?
Is she better yet?

WayWicked...you have to realize, that the voters don't vote as a WHOLE...it's all individual votes, so it's not a matter of who they feel sorry for not winning, it's a matter of who is the best. I don't think the TONY voters are worried about who is going to be upset.
C'mon. It's not like Sara is pulling a Donna Murphy or even, really, a Chenoweth, (and I don't think absences hurt Kristin as much as having already won in '99 plus being in a VERY competitive category last year). The girl is sick. Poorly timed? Duh. But legit? I'd count on it.
Plus, checking out the Tony website last night, I noticed in the pictures of Thursday rehearsals that Sara was there, (sittin' up in the grail... dunno if she actually sang or not, but she made the effort, for god sake...)

Shu...do you think that Tony voters vote simply based on their opinions? They talk to fellow voters. They talk to industry people. Their opinions are swayed. How else would Ave Q had won last year? Certainly not because it was the best.
I can totally see Sara getting the award cause of a lack of Spam awards. I don't think she was the best performance in that catagory, but I do agree she will get it.
Which is unfortunate since the real winner is Kelli O'Hara.
"Christina flew in out of nowhere, having never appeared on a Broadway stage, and she certainly doesn't plan on staying there for years to come. Vicki has devoted her life to the stage and is performing the role of her life."
Deserves it? Yes, in your opinion. However, isn't it about the present? I mean, so what Christina won't be on Bway in the future, if she's good enough to win the Tony now (haven't seen her, so not sure), then why not?
We all know why Kristin was out last year, don't we!? I can't imagine trying to perform on Broadway with an injured neck like she did for as long as she did. I think that she was justified in taking these breaks, and I can say that since I spent 36 hours on a bus from my home to NYC to see her and she was out!

Those absenses of Cheno's were wayyy before the nominations were even announced. She didn't win because there was an insanely large amount of competition last year in the Lead Actress in a Musical category. Her neck injury was fairly early on in her run.

If Sara Ramierz doesn't win becuase of an absence, there is something cleary wrong with the Tony voters.

I saw the show Wednesday (matinee) with Sara's stand-in (Darlene?)performing and I am wondering how much better Sara is. I have the CD and they have two different styles of singing but I was very impressed with performance I saw. It's not a huge role and I'm trying to imagine how much better Sara could be-----What makes her such a stand-out?
"Mob Rules" mentality, like everything else. Ramirez is this seasons "it" girl even though much like last years "it" girl, Anika "GOD" Rose, she's been around for the better part of a decade. It's like I said earlier, she (and Rose for that matter), where hardly plucked from obscurity, they simply, at long last, landed roles worthy of early promise.
Eric Idle is to credit for Sara's performance. There's nothing to it. Anyone could do it. Her part is made up completely of externals and effects thrown on top of her voice and actions. It's random and simple gag humor. It requires almost no internal effort.
I'm not surprised. I'm sure, without even having to see her in it, that she was giving a much better performance in previous roles, but as I said, it's the hype surrounding this show and she's gotten caught up in it. From what I've been reading and hearing (which I trust more), this is far from being her best stage moment. Say what you will about the turkey that was Facinating Rhythm, there were brilliant performances all around with that cast, including Ramirez'

"And the TONY goes to...
Jan Maxwell."
"Whoops, my bad folks. It says the Tony does NOT go to..."
Is Sara back yet? Since I see she's been to rehearsals for the Tonys, is she back in the show?

My two cents.
I saw all the nominated performances with the exception of Jan in Chitty because I have no desire to see Chitty at all. When I saw Spamalot, Sara was out but at the very least I saw her character.
Now with Sara, okay. The woman has one of the greatest voices I've heard in a very long time. She's amazing and unbelievably versatile. But I don't believe that she should get the Tony. Give her a grammy or something :) As someone said before, it was a very external part. No arc. Just inserted at various parts of the show.
This I think was also the case with Joanna Gleason. I would have almost like to have seen Sara Gettlefinger get a nod instead of her. She at least created this hysterical character, stole the first act with her song. Joanna was just deadpan. Mind you - that's what she's great at. Her role just didn't grab me. Kind of flat.
Miss O'Hara - well I loved Piazza. I thought she did an incredible job with Clara Johnson. We saw her journey, we witnessed her highs and lows with a voice that soared. Miss Keenan-Bolger also did this. We saw her journey from beginning to end. The quiet outsider of the Spelling Bee with a complicated home life and being alone.
Clearly I think the front runners are Kelli and Celia. It's sad to hear that Celia isn't getting more votes from you guys. "The I Love You Song" from Bee was amazing and she had some amazing moments with Dan Fogler as Barfee. Kelli as well and her moments, the delicateness of "The Light in the Piazza" in Act Two, and her interactions with Victoria.
So - my votes go to Celia and Kelli. It's not a singing award, it's an acting award. I believe these two women developed two incredible characters and deserve accolades for their work :)
okay, I'm getting off my soapbox :)

Totally agree with you, kayla. My thoughts exactly.
Yay for Celia and Kelli, and for actual characters and acting.

Obviously we saw her perform last night but has she been back in the show? Is she better? Were those real coughs as she walked to the podium last nite?
So she's been sick and out of the show...but able to perform at the Tony Awards?
Yes. Because singing once on TV in a group number is a whole different kettle of fish to belting out a whole show 8 times a week.
Plus you know she was trying to prepare for this perfomance during her time off.
