Scott Rudin's MAME choice

I'm getting this second (maybe third?) hand but my friend has been right about Rudin before. But take it with a grain of salt.

According to him, Rudin had purchased Mame for Michelle Pfeiffer.

She had agreed to do it and was taking voice lessons but could never get her voice up to snuff to sing that score six shows a week (which would have been her contract). So, even before all the Rudin stuff dropped, this was dead.

However, wanting to work with her, he then purchased the rights to A Little Night Music (it was an easier sing). However, now the show is in limbo. I don't know of any of the director/co star particulars on either show. And it sounds almost like a gay dream, but it also sounds like it could be true.

This sounds pretty legit to me. Pfeiffer makes sense as someone in the lineage of Midler and Jackman, megastars who would be a huge get for a major classic musical revival.

I am curious then from your friends information about this. I had heard from a friend Mame had been planned for a Cher and Meryl piece and Night Music was planned to be Julie Andrews and Cate Blanchett.

I definitely don’t mind the sound of Michelle Pfeiffer and Julie Andrews either.

Curious what will happen with them now

Except those people are legitimate singers while the other is Michelle Pfeiffer. Being able to get through Grease 2 and Fabulous Baker Boys onscreen is not the same as being able to sing a Broadway score adequately, let alone multiple performances a week.

The Cher "Mame" rumors have been circulating since the mid 90's. Be it on tv, film or stage.

I honestly could see MP in Sunset Boulevard but not Mame.

I've had this info for a while now and I was just waiting for it to show up someplace else to legitimize it. But it hasn't so I just thought I'd throw it out there.

"

Do we really think the man who cast Sutton Foster as Marian the Librarian and said she's the best he heard sing it since Barbara Cook cares that deeply about vocal ability?

I hope this gets revived because it is my favorite musical comedy ever, at least with a talent on the evel of Angela L. If it ever has a chance of revival, it will need a big star, who is also age appropriate, as Mame ages at least 20 years in the show (think Patrick as a boy vs a man with a child around 10 years in age). It is never going to be Jane Kraskowski. Probably not a lot of options who have the talent, charisma, warmth and ability to do comedy, AND will sell tickets. MAybe is Roundabout tries it some time, but I think that would be the only way.
