So I was discussing the news of next year's Tony Awards being presented at the United Palace with someone yesterday. He mentioned that "I’d like it if the 77th Tonys were held at the Palace, if it reopens, and perhaps they do a medley of shows that played there." I said in response to the latter "I highly doubt that’s ever going to happen. Would that many people even be interested in seeing it? I don’t think so." Then he brought up how the 1975 Tonys presented shows that played the Winter Garden and the 1982 Tonys showed numbers from musicals that played the Imperial. To which then I said "But that was then. This is now. The Tonys don’t do stuff like that anymore and I highly doubt they’re all of the sudden going to back to doing so."

What does everyone else here think? Can you ever see the Tony Awards going back to doing performances like that on the telecast?

Would cost them a fortune.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

What they should do is pre-record the musical performances on their respective stages as they did at the 74th Tony Awards.

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

I highly doubt they would do this. Tony performances cost an absolute fortune. Being a Best Musical nominee guarantees you a performance slot if you want it, but producers of each nominated show foot the bill. So while a montage of past performances from that theater would tickle theater nerds, who is paying for it? Because the Tonys/CBS is most definitely not.

I can see individual shows doing this if they are still running. IE: if the ceremony was ever hosted at the Gershwin again, Wicked might perform if they thought it would give them a nice sales bump. And maybe ONE show that has meaning to the theater/year/ceremony would perform (the United Palace is just screaming for an In the Heights number in the opening, right? You have to think they will try to get Lin to host). But the economics behind doing a full retrospective montage for a specific theater is just not viable.

It is a great idea, nevertheless. I love it when they throw in a number from an old show.  One of my favorite Tony numbers ever was Lansbury and Arthur doing Bosom Buddies.  I’d rather see a great number than a good number (or in some cases, a mediocre number) from the current season’s musical.
