guys and dolls? aida? could there be more different shows?
Seussical is heaps more fun? and an awesome sing! more roles more scope to be different! yeah the show is unbelievably flawed, but so much scope for being creative
I saw a high school production of SHOWBOAT with an all white cast. That was pretty remarkable.

I'm sure I'll have a great time. But.... Aida would've been great because we're using our city's beautiful old movie house turned theatre. GORGEOUS. And we only use it every other year... Oh well.
Our theater director looked at Aida and all the ones that are "trendy" for high schools to do these days. He didn't want to do any of them (I know he didn't like Aida's book). We almost did Jesus Christ Superstar (wouldn't that have been something....) but we're now doing The Scarlet Pimpernel. It was waaaaay out of left field...

Next year, we'll hopefully do Into The Woods.
Hopefully.
Unless he decides to do, I dunno, bye bye birdie 2.
Puppetry of the penis...but that's a little too obvious, huh?

Expanding on some of Margo's thoughts, "Carmen Jones," maybe.

My school was talking about doing The Full Monty. Almost happened. But then they decided to save for when we have more talented guys.Plus there was the small problem of a black guy, which we didnt have.
I dont think that there will ever be a musical that isnt attempted by a high school, unless its unheard of or a flop. I dont think Grind, Seesaw, or Merlin will be enetered into any Cappie competitions anytime soon.

my theatre (high school level) did a produciton of RENT back in 2000, i didnt get to see it, but i heard it was pretty good.
just out of curiosity, has anyone seen a production of "the wind in the willows" cuz supposedly it's a musical and my school is doing it next year. sigh.
I would LOVE to see a High School somewhere do La Cage... Just for the reactions from the parents. Especially if it popped up in some largely conservative town.
Actually, my old high school director and I were throwing around show ideas for my ol' Alma Mater and La Cage came up. I believe her quote was along the lines of, "Yep. And that's the year we also kill the Drama Club outright." Yes, it's a bit of a tight-ass conservative community around here. Hell, the local community theater won't touch Assassins, though we've pitched it more than once. "Too controversial." Riiiiight.

How the heck have schools done RENT?
Similarly, I didn't know the rights were out for BARE??

If the world knows what's good for itself, Wicked rights will never. EVER. Be released to theatres other than professional theatres.

Yes, the rights are in fact avalable for BARE, thanks for your concern though.
Futurewinner - Your high school almost did The Full Monty? Wow. Would love to see parents react to their kids doing a musical that involves stripping to such a large degree....
Not concerned. Just majorly surprised.
Heh. This is me. This is the loop. This is me OUT of the loop.

Jess925- "pretty good" or not, the rights to RENT are FAR from being out, so it must have been severly illegal.
We did Angels at my college.
It was fantastic. We only did Millenium Approaches--not Perestroika.
I go to a performing arts school as well and we're always looking for things that people don't expect us to do.
Unfortunately next year looks like 'CATS' Which everyone is loathing because we all hate the show. But our principle wants it >.<
And our entire department is full of boys who'd flip over backwards (literally) to do 'La Cage...' but the girls would throw a fit at not having any parts.
Further more, I just saw a high school do 'Pageant' so I suppose not all boys are uncomfortable in drag *shrugs*
As far as shows that High Schools won't do, I'd agree that most would have a hard time tackling 'The Light in the Piazza' Even though I saw a high school do 'Pirates of Penzance' so it's not like the vocals aren't out there....
I dunno. I think almost anything that's come to Broadway SOME high school would be willing to do.... this is a hard one

I imagine Closer is a bit extreme for a high school production. I directed Bent at university and it created a bit of a stir so it's also probably too much for a younger cast.

I could see high schools doing PIAZZA, actually. One of my mothers friends told me that her school did RENT a while back, which MUST have been VERY illigal! She can say much about it because she was working back stage for it.
