When my high school did Once on This Island we cut the "rise like yeast" line, substituting something about a feast. Our Asaka threw it in for one performance, which was the one we taped. The director was furious.

"NOW is the winter of our discontent!"

>>I don't think that Rent, Avenue Q, La Cage, A Chorus Line, Wicked, and The Producers will be done in high schools. Maybe colleges could pull of doing The Producers and A Chorus Line, but probably not the other ones I mentioned.<<
I saw A Chorus Line done by a high school a couple years ago and it was very good.
I really don't think Reefer Madness will be done either. I just saw it today for the first time, actually. I don't *think* the rights are out yet, isn't it pretty new? I don't know though, just speculation on my part.

Someone (I'm lazy) said pages ago that they saw a high school do Rent...I didn't think you could legally do Rent yet...I'm sure some one answered this in the pages i skipped over..
my HS did an Angels in America showcase we did scenes from it and we didn't cange a thing....we did most of the show except for the really tiny scenes...i did the Prior Harper drag queen scene...i was prior
Last year, a high school did Virginia Woolf and it was supposed to have been incredible. One of the actors even received a Cappie (High School Tony) for the show, and I believe at least 2 of the cast members were nominated.

I agree that many, many shows (especially recent ones) shouldn't be done, mainly do to the budget needed to pull them off respectably. However, I don't think most shows should be considered unreachable for high school students. Youth doesn't necessarily equal ignorance or lack of talent. Yes, it's harder for adolescents to relate to characters in more "mature" shows, but isn't that what acting is all about? Stretching beyong our nature personality and knowledge? As for me, I'd rather see (and be in) a lower quality "adult" show that tests and challenges the students, rather than a solid one that simply allows them to show how cute they are.
