Not for main productions, but I know high school students that have taken on Last 5 Years as a final theatre project.
Rosencrantz: "Be happy - if you're not even HAPPY what's so good about surviving? We'll be all right. I suppose we just go on."
- from Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
That's actually cool, Plum. I think its a pretty terrible choice for a high school (outside of perhaps a Performing Arts school) but good for them for trying something different and daring. How many high school productions of GREASE can you sit through?
"But I relish every brillant inspired moment. This is who I'm determined to be- an actor/singer/dancer-no, I take that back, this is who I am. These people are my tribe, my destiny. I know it.
-How I Paid for College; A story of sex, theft, friendship and musical theater.
BroadwayGirl107, Dreamgirls was done this past year at a private school in my area. There were two black girls in the cast an neither of them had a lead. Ha. Funny. And the Effie was real tiny. Ask Dietcherryemma about it.
I actually saw a small high school try an attempt at RENT. I was horrified. I mean that just falls under one of the shows that is near impossible for a high school to do well and it was a disaster. I could ramble about it for pages but I'll just leave it at "words cannot describe what its like to see a 15 year old try to do Out Tonight" (only it was the censored version of things so parents wouldn't get pissed." Lord save us all....
I wanted to get something that an "ex"-junkie like him would really appreciate and cherish....it's a brick of heroin shaped like a heart.
-Scrubs
CurtainUp - I am actually one of those students who has taken on L5Y as a separate project. But I can't see the high school doing that show as its annual production.
Well most guys (even those who arent jocks) in high school aren't comfortable enough with their sexuality to have kissing scenes on stage with another guy...
There really are very few shows that NO high school in the country might do. Every single Sondheim show has been done in high school (including Assassins), as has A Chorus Line, Hair, Dreamgirls, Rocky Horror and others that seem to be a bit of a stretch.
I can't imagine Hedwig being done, given that it's basically one character (not to mention the subject matter).
Porgy and Bess I have a hard time seeing a high school pulling off, though maybe it's happened (a predominantly black performing arts high school with dozens of opera students perhaps?).
As someone pointed out, Jerome Robbins Broadway, Movin Out, Fosse and Contact would be REALLY tough to cast with high school students -- maybe a dance school or something.
