Okay, 'scuse me if there's been a thread on this topic before, but I did a search and couldn't find one.
The topic is self-explanatory. What shows will never be done by high schools, for any reason, be it language, content, sets, talent requirement, ect?
My vote goes to the obvious ones: Rent, Avenue Q, Rocky Horror, La Cage, and Cabaret. All for issues of sexual stuff, language, and besides, you aren't going to find too many high school boys willing to play transvestites or drag queens.
Discuss. Add to the list.

Uh...Cabaret is definitely done by high schools. Just thought I'd put that out there.
Cabaret and Chicago has been done by High Schools. Which really pisses me off. I just really HATE when High Schools try to be big shots, and try to tackle an adult show. Ugh.

Well Angels in America definitely, at least by my high school. The school board freaked out at the idea of having a play about GAY PEOPLE! It was ridiculous

Angels in America is just too massive to be done by a high school- it's so epic it needs to be performed over two nights.
RENT will be done by high schools too. Scary.
But some that probably will not:
Oh Calcutta
Follies
Let My People Come!
La Cage Aux Folles

I was really surprised when I found this out, but the middle school at my school (its k-12) might do Shockheaded Peter next year. I think it is kind of wierd for kids to do that show. I'd be interested in seeing their parents reactions however.

lots of schools try to do chicago...for the wrong reasons though (cough movie cough)

if the rights are ever released...schools will be clammoring all over the place for RENT even though it shouldnt be done

Once again, uh...Follies has been done by at least one high school.
I know some weird high schools, don't I?

Well for High School Purposes, could Angel be turned into a girl? I know you lose the whole transvestite edge and a few lines would have to be changed, but couldn't a watered-down version be done?
What high school did FOLLIES? How much did the students hate THEIR drama teacher?
And I doubt you'll see FOSSE or JEROME ROBBINS BROADWAY or MOVIN OUT at any high schools soon either.

Please say you're joking. Anyway, I'm guessing lines involving "sodomy" and other choice words would be what people find really offensive.
Caroline, or Change will never be done by a high school.
And Assassins.

The Wild Party (either one)
I've heard of a high school doing Lippa's Wild Party.
a show like bare would never be done at a high scool. the entire show is so gay, and unfortunately, it'd be too 'different' i guess to do in a high school. there's a scene or two that are a bit raunchy, but they could easily be watered down.
I doubt a high school would do Dreamgirls either.

Michael Bennett- Actually, that production of Follies was a big hit with the students and community. Let's just say that town is really into its high school musicals.

The Last Five Years, due to the cast size
And I can hope that no school will ever do Phantom of the Opera, but that may be wishful thinking on my part. Same goes for Wicked.
I'm thinking no high school would do Company, A Little Night Music, or The Light in the Piazza, either.
I can see lots of high schools attempting Wicked once the rights are released. "Attempting" being the key word... it's a popular show, but I cringe at the idea of sixteen-year-old girls, no matter how talented, trying to perform this show.
Besides, it would be insanely hard to stage, what with the bubble and the flying and all.
Not for main productions, but I know high school students that have taken on Last 5 Years as a final theatre project.
That's actually cool, Plum. I think its a pretty terrible choice for a high school (outside of perhaps a Performing Arts school) but good for them for trying something different and daring. How many high school productions of GREASE can you sit through?
