I didn't see Fascinating Rhythm but heard Sara Ramirez talk about it and she said they kind of "American Idolized" Gershwin's work and a lot of people didn't like it.
I saw the show a few times and while Ramirez might have somewhat of a point (it was way too hip for the crowd it was geared towards), she can't use the "American Idol" term as Fasc Rhythm happened years before American Idol did. This isn't like a Brooklyn situation which was clearly going for that deliberately. All that being said, what I think "killed" the show was the direction, or rather lackthereof and REALLY poor concepts for some of the numbers.
The Gerswhin classic "Isn't It A Pity" was turned into a lesbian pick up number between Ramirez and a woman whose name escapes me. There was a homoerotic twist to a number Patrick wilson did (forgot the song), Orfeh and Adriane Lenox did "Cousin From Milwaukee" as prostitutes..you get the idea. And then there were absolutely brilliant numbers such as "I got Rhythm" that was a classic full company tap extravaganza which I felt was blatantly copied in subsequent shows, most notably, Millie.
The singing/singers were flawless, young, gorgeous. The lights, sets, all stunning, the choreography interesting but none of the elements *fit together*. It was all over the place and insulting to true musical/Gershwin lovers. That's my take and as you know, I'm obsessed with this show and most of it's cast.
Can someone explain why Thou Shalt Not sucked so much? I am very interested in buying the cast album just to hear it but I would like to know a bit about it. I've search and the only things that I have come up with is how much it sucks.
And someone really put Sweeney as a horrible show? Seriously?
The 1940's Radio Hour and Nick and Nora. Surely there is better material for these people. Dance A Little Closer and Teddy and Alice (sorry Len, you are the god of Broadway but even god made Tom Delay) and the excermental "Zenda" one of the numerous flops that Alfred Drake starred in. To his credit, he lent his stature to many a new show and by me that's O-K!
