I get to take my daughter to see two shows the first week in April. She is almost seven. She saw Poppins last April. She was wonderfully behaved(sat right behind the conductor)but was kind of bored by the end (it ran a bit long). Already saw Lion.Any opinions on other shows appropriate for a 7 yr old besides Mermaid. Grease,Mamma Xanadu? Are these like PG rated? She loves the movie Grease, but with the bad reviews, I'd like her to see something special. But are these other shows' content appropriate for kids. I am less than thrilled that she loves the movie Grease but we did the smoking lecture and she hates the "cool" Sandy. Thanks..

Hairspray?

I second Hairspray. I was at the stagedoor yesterday and there was a little boy there, only four and a half years old, with his parents, and it was his first Broadway show. Definitely a good show for a child your daughter's age.

SPRING AWAKENING and RENT sounds up her alley.

At least she won't be bored. Right? re: Shows for a 7 yr. old

Brody, you beat me to it.

Thanks for the replies..Do you know if Hairspray is under 2 1/2 hours. I saw Spring Awakening and that is totally inappropriae for a 7 yr. old. The sex scene is very in your face. She'd be laughing and in shock over a seeing a bare butt.

Thank you..Considering the whole theater experience for her and overall wow factor, would you recommend Hairspray over Grease?

Definately without a doubt Hairspray..over anything haha especially for her age. It runs 2 hours and 40 minutes with one 15 minute intermission, very upbeat and happy sure to hold her attention.

I thought noone under 5 can get into the theatre? Or was it MTV?

My 6 year old cousin loved it to. She loved Ofreh as Paulette the most. She also loved Laura Bell Bundy.

There's also an off broadway show called "Pinkalicious" at New World Stages for children.

Hairspray is a good choice. How about Little Mermaid?

Hairspray, The Little Mermaid or Legally Blonde! Hope you both enjoy yourselves!

Spellingbeefan,

It is 4 and under that can't get into the theatre. But, I don't think that they are strict about that.

I would suggest Grease but your right. It's awful. I have yet to see it. But, I have read all the reviews and heard word of mouth. It ain't good trust me.

But, If you want to take your child to see it and they aren't a fan of the cool sandy. Tell them this. That in the end Sandy didn't need to change because she got the guy by being herself in the end.

I would go for Hairspray. Saw it for the second time a couple of weeks ago. If she isn't so big on the story or show there are enough flashing colorful lights to get her to be entertained for the entier thing.

My 7yo SON saw LB and LOVED it as did my 11 yo DD. (There is a little questionable language/situation) But there is just as much in Hairspray. (We are seeing that next month.)

The production is complete fluff...but one of the best pieces of fluff ever done. Totally enjoyable and entertaining. I was delightfully suprised by it.

And I do not reccommend Grease for kids that young. (I hate it anyway, and never reccommend it to anyone)

Why did I always think you were in high school? Maybe there another person with a similar screen name in HS...

Don't know why. Look at me, I'm all grown up! (Quote anyone?)

There IS someone else on here w/the same name without the numbers at the end -- which is WHY I have the #s at the end.
But I've never seen a post by her. (I haven't been posting here all that long: only a month or two.)

I second Brody's picks...

You know I would want to expose my kids to the harshness of the world early. 7 is yesterday's 14! In a year or two, she will want to take out the car and not come back till after 2am... so, start preparing for it now re: Shows for a 7 yr. old

I really really think LEGALLY BLONDE and WICKED would be the best choices. Wicked has that WOW factor and all little girls adore it! Legally Blonde is PINK PINK PINK and over the top. They are both appropriate for your daughter and I just know she will love them! Let us know what you decide and how the shows go! Good luck!

I agree - but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone over 7.

All your replies have been helpful. Before this I was leaning toward Mermaid and Grease...But I decided Hairspray for one of them. I already sw Legally Blonde (great fun) so I have decided her two shows will be Hairspray and Grease. (I can't even get orch. seats for Wicked at ticketmaster prices for April, I am partial to good orch seats, willing to pay to hear the real music, but not overpay scalpers)
Now this may sound awful, but I am choosing the bad reviewed Grease over Mermaid beacuse at 7 she is "so over the fairytale princess stuff" and would rather see a bad Grease for the cool song and dance numbers(Crumm better dance as good as Travolta)and she loves high school now (thanks to HS Musical). I'll go along with it because Hairspray replaces Mermaid in running time and wow effect, am I right????

I guess she and I are those people drawn by the Grease name, no matter what. Wish they made better show. At least from what i read they did tone down the negative influences and made it cleaner. I can't believe I am about to buy tickets for me and her and am picking Grease over Mermaid because she is "so over Ariel". At least Hairspray is still good theater, right???
thanks again!

Last night my 3 yr. old chimed in about wanting to see Ariel on Broadway. she doesn't even know what broadway is Ha..Luckily at that age i could easily still fib and distract her.

Saw Grease this summer and stood at the stage door with 2 7 yr old twins. They loved it. And if I remember correctly it runs just under 2 hours. I am taking my group of 11 yr olds this summer.
