Billy Elliot. So many people around me were crying and I wasn't sure why. They did a great job, and I feel the acting Tonys were justified, but overall? Let down.
I too forgot to mention LION KING. As others have pointed out, the opening sequence is great; the rest, however, is rubbish.
After all these years, i still feel RAGTIME was robbed of the Best Tony the year LION KING undeservedly took home that prize...
I might be a minority here but:
Next to Normal....I cringe
The Will Rogers Follies....seriously, over Miss Saigon???
Cats...love it...but idk.
Next to Normal. It seems like they throw every worst case scenario of Diana's disease out there just to make it seem deeper than it is.

Definitely The Phantom of the Opera is one of mine.
Jersey Boys...to this day I can't comprehend the hoopla! Too me, it was like a VH1 bio on the 4 Seasons. I had a wonderful seat close up, and I loved the music growing up, but the play was merely forgettable. I never even listened to the CD more than once.
Jersey Boys.
West Side Story as well, and it's not because I don't like the show. I think it's great, but I don't understand why it is so popular while other classics aren't. WSS sells out all over the world, and other fabulous classics get a luke warm response. I don't think WSS is that much better than, say, Gypsy or Guys and Dolls.

Phantom - I think I fell asleep when Christine was singing at her father's grave.

'Maybe it's just me, and that I'm trying to be too literal, but it seems to me that the thread is about "shows that you don't get," not "shows you don't like," or "shows you want to dump on" or even "shows you don't get why they have endured/are popular/ever were written."'
I agree. The subject line should have been "Shows you don't like." That would have saved me the trouble of reading it expecting to find something insightful. Instead it's a litany of people hating on certain shows that they don't like.
Tell us WHY you didn't "get" it.
Don't get Les Miserables or Phantom of the Opera? Here's a clue: They're musical adaptations of books. Nothing more. Nothing less. Don't like them? Then don't go see them again.
Side Show? What's not to get? It's a biography. It's about tolerance of people who are different. Boom. Done. Any more questions? Now, it might not be your taste in musical theater, but how could you possibly not "get it".
There are popular shows that I don't like, but I understand why other people might like them.
