They recouped like a month ago. The have made 40.8 million, and had a 24 million dollar investment in the beginning, which means as of July 19th, they had made a 16.8 million dollar profit!
wtf is this a joke? There is no way Shrek could have recouped by now.
But I will be very, very pleasantly happy to be proven wrong.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
No....I'm sure there has not been a re-coup yet. The OP simply took the Gross and subtracted the initial investment. There is no consideration to running costs in his/her configuration.
We would have heard OFFICIALLY had it re-couped. Don't we always?
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

A show like Shrek would cost AT LEAST $600,000/week to run. (Probably more, I'm very sure) Luckily for them, they're doing well in these summer weeks, but I'm sure it'll suffer once September rolls in.
"Hey, you! You're the worst thing to happen to musical theatre since Andrew Lloyd Webber!"
-Family Guy
Impossible. With weekly operating costs and less than sellout status there in no way Shrek could have recouped. If 24 mil was invested "in the beginning", that doesn't mean more hasn't been spent on the production. Big productions like Shrek cost a fortune to run and, even if the don't lose money week by week, they may never make enough to repay the initial investment. Ragtime, Titanic, Kiss of the Spider Woman and Jeckyll and Hyde all ran for years and none recouped. Updated On: 7/22/09 at 08:00 AM
I love it when someone shows up and makes a statement of fact that is so ludicrous.
If you take a look at the grosses for SHREK, not quite $6M for 2008, and less than $23M. I may not be a math whiz, but that's a total ticket sales since opening of less than $30M.
So tell us, Patti Lupone Fan, from whose butt did you pull your $40.8M figure?

this is why this board is becoming a complete joke.
This one thread is the epitome of people on this board not knowing a thing about this business at all. Shrek recouped? Sure it did ooh wait. since you are obviously under the age of 15 and got held back maybe 2 grades, did you forget to realize that it costs money to run a show? It's op costs are 750,000 a week. Yes I know that for a fact and no I do not have a excel spreadsheet to show you all. The show will never recoup. Never.
It's making 800,000-1 million a week in the summer. Losing money in the other months. It will close in jan and not come close to recouping.
^I'll admit, I'm not so sure about that. Remember Beauty & the Beast, the show which was doomed from the start? After five okay years at one of the largest theatres on Broadway, it transferred uisng it's tour set, and stayed open for another 8 years. While I'm ot sure if Shrek could do just that, I'm imagine a similar path if the producers wish to get their money's worth out of the show. Right now it isn't doing that bad, Wicked was doing this well after the Tonys that year as well. Believe me, it's catching on pretty quickly: last time I was at colony Records, they were sold out of the Shrek OCRs, BOTH of them. While I don't think it will become as successful as Beauty & the Beast, it does have the potential to atleast recoup it's initial investment. Don't count Shrek out of the race just yet, it's still holding together rather strongly.
I'll believe Shrek has recouped when their producers make an announcement saying they've recouped. As others have already said, there's no way they're breaking even right now with what they are pulling in.
This time next year, it'll probably be gone.

Actually, isn't this thread about one person not knowing how things work, the rest having something of a grasp on it, and one person being a complete bitch?
Shrek hasn't recouped and I can't imagine it will. But what do I know.
A tip for the OP, if you want to know for sure which shows have recouped and which have not; go to Playbill.com and type recoup into the search box. All the shows which have recouped will show up; and Shrek isn't among the list.

Yay for Sutton Foster!
That is SO cute! :) I love that they recouped "like" a month ago, and that they have now made millions in profit and the OP is only glad for Sutton Foster!

"Actually, isn't this thread about one person not knowing how things work, the rest having something of a grasp on it, and one person being a complete bitch?"
What about Yay for Brian d'Arcy James, Daniel Breaker, Chris Sieber and the rest of the talented cast. Personally, I think the show is very good. I'd like to see it recoup and prove everyone wrong.
Heck, the actors get paid no matter what. No big deal for them one way or another...except for how long the show runs. Yes, I'm sure it is personally SATISFYING for your show to re-coup while you are in it, but I doubt that it really makes a difference otherwise.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

No, it hasn't recouped. Producers LOVE putting out a press release when they recoup. We'd have seen one immediately after. It has been reported that their advance was not strong. They've also had some struggling weeks. I imagine the Fall will not be particularly kind to this kid friendly show.
And why YAY for Sutton Foster? And actor doesn't stand to make any more money if a show recoups. She's not an investor, so she's not getting anything out of the deal but a steady job. And I'm sure, if Shrek continues, we'll see many cast replacements towards the end of the year.

A few actors, especially big stars, have in their contract that they get a pay raise once the show recoups. I haven't seen Sutton's contract, but I'd guess that she's important enough to get at least a small bump post-recoupment.
