What a huge huge bummer, especially since the residential tower will go up anyway, full of half-empty multi-million dollar homes.

Not snarking, but - why? It's the Broadway Theatre District - there are plenty of non-Broadway theatres in other neighborhoods - Lincoln Center, The Public, The Atlantic, BRIC, BAM, TFANA, etc.; and in the future, there'll be The Shed and the WTC Performing Arts Center. Now that there's an almost empty lot at 8th and 45th-46th, why not build a theatre there, as planned? There's certainly a good argument for keeping a commercial theatre district in one (rather large) place - just like London's West End.

The cost ($150 million) for the new theatre had been reported for some time. Why not spend some of that money instead to acquire the Hellinger? A 1500-seat single balcony musical theatre would never be empty these days.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but we need new theaters. That doesn't necessarily mean extra theaters (you can replace current theaters or just massively renovate). But the way these old theaters are constructed are horrible for the 21st century.

It's almost impossible to go anywhere if you're handicapped, there aren't enough (or big enough) bathrooms, the seats are too small and the leg room is tiny, etc. We don't need fancy art on the sides, in fact video boards there could enhance some shows. They could put more research & effort into making sure every seat is a good view and is comfortable for our 21st century height & weight needs. They can make enough bathrooms in enough areas so there's not a logjam literally every intermission. And they can make backstage more comfortable for the cast & crew.

One of the perhaps less pleasant aspects of this situation is that businesses have been forced out and buildings demolished in order to make space for this building which they now say they aren't erecting (but, as noted above, I'm skeptical that this news item should be taken at face value, without reading something[s] between the lines).

What's crazy is that black-box spaces are cheaper to build than proscenium spaces. It would require the least amount of capital to get it built, and would probably be the best investment.

I would've thought that the Shuberts would welcome a large theatre to go with there other 5 large houses in their portfolio, sine many years ago they were forced to sell the St James.
