Sia musical to premiere at New York Theatre Workshop

BroadwayWorld has just learned that the first production of the New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) 2025/26 Season will be the world premiere of the new musical Saturday Church. Directed by NYTW Usual Suspect and Tony Award nominee Whitney White (Jaja’s African Hair Braiding), Saturday Church features a book by Emmy Award nominee Damon Cardasis (She Came to Me) & Pulitzer Prize winner and Tony Award nominee James Ijames (Fat Ham), with music and lyrics from Grammy Award nominee Sia (“Chandelier,” This Is Acting, 1000 Forms of Fear) and additional music by Grammy Award winner Honey Dijon (Black Girl Magic).

Saturday Church will feature music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Special Tony Award Recipient Jason Michael Webb (MJ The Musical) and Grammy Award winner Luke Solomon (Beyonce’s Renaissance) and choreography by Obie Award winner Darrell Grand Moultrie (Fat Ham). It is conceived for the stage and based on the Spring Pictures film of the same name, written and directed by Cardasis.

The source material isn't a movie that was on my radar... might have to check it out.

At any rate, good thing Sia is adapting that and not her own movie Music.

What? There were no queer songwriters to helm the score of a musical about voguing and ballroom culture? They had to hire the problematic, white, Australian lady?

No, thank you. Sia is trash and so is most of her music. Even if they pull from her existing catalog vs. original material, I just have to ask “Why?” Honey Dijon may be writing additional material, but this will be pushed as Sia’s musical.

Sia has identified as either being queer or bisexual in the past.

The show will release an EP of songs from the musical, titled Are There Any Queens in the House, June 27. The EP can be streamed here.

The EP will feature two songs: a newly written one called “Are There Any Queens in The House?” (featuring J. Harrison Ghee) and “Sunday” (featuring the voices of Saturday Church). The EP is produced by Luke Solomon, Jason Michael Webb, Honey Dijon, Chris Penny, and Sia.

WHITE AUSTRALIANS??? AND A WOMAN??! NEVER!!!!!

Seriously though, this seems like an interesting idea for a musical and good for them for finding a property that isn't some worn to the stump movie from the 80s-90s.

Thank you. For some reason they don’t have the 10/12 at 7:00 performance available.
