I try to mix it up a lot. One thing I always remember is not to sing anything that is too well known. Songs that are really famous are usually attributed to someone famous, and theres usually no way anyone else can compare. Maybe this Time, Send in the Clowns, Memory, Over the Rainbow to name a few. That was something they stressed was really important to us at school. I also try not to get too obscure though so the directors have no clue what I'm actually singing.
well i have a question for all you in the know. i am young only 16 and i am starting to look at audition songs and i found one from the boy from oz steph j. block sings it but it is not in the song book is there anyway i can find the sheet music somewhere else? thanks o the song is She loves to hear the music
a lot of songs from "the last five years" tend to work well at auditions- a lot of them are very difficult though. i usually stick to "if i didn't believe in you", the others are usually out of my range. "rademas' letter" from aida has gotten me a couple of parts too.

I tend to switch it up, I use some new songs like I'm Not Afraid of Anything (which is GREAT if you're only doing 16 bars but dumb if you're doing the whole thing- it's so reptetative) and old songs like I Could Have Danced All Night, just to do a little research on what seems to generate the best responses.
At least in Toronto, hardly anyone is doing the classics anymore. EVERYONE is doing Parade/Songs for A New World/ Hairspray and the like. Every time I do a classic the casting directors just eat it up, they really seem to appreciate it.
Of course- if you go to a community theatre audition they tend to be overloaded with classics. Then a newer piece would be great.
Or an obscure classic they haven't heard in decades. I sang Where or When (not overly obscure, but not often performed) for my Kiss Me Kate audition and landed Bianca.

i tend to switch it up but some of them are "wherever he ain't" from mack and mabel (if its a belt part), "bill" (for head voice), and "wanting" from rags which has gotten me quite a few roles....i always want to switch songs for every audition though

judy_... I've used the same songs you have. My lucky one must be I could have danced all night
I've used Far From the Home I Love twice.
For NYSSMA I got 27/28.
For My Fair Lady I got Second costermonger/servant's chorus/flower girl/Hopkin's posse/Ascot Lady
Next time I'm doign Gimme Gimme.
I tend to switch them up too - but the one song that never failed me is "All I Need Is the Girl". However, "Giants in the Sky", "Being Alive", and "Some People" really made casting directors take a look at me, and give me some callbacks. I am trying to work on some more contemporary material, though.
Cheers,

bwysweetheart,
I Could Have Danced All Night is my lucky song too! Which totally surprised me. The reason I used it in the first place is because I was away from home when I got called for an audition, and it was among the only sheet music I had on me. It went extremely well, so I kept using it again and again, to great reviews.
Now I'm not afraid of doing the classics anymore! THey love them!
