Just wondering if there is one song you always seem to sing when you're auditioning for a show. That one song that you're so comfortable with and always seems to bring you luck. Mine was always "Corner of the Sky".
"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
when i auditioned for eponine (my first show) i used 'i know the truth' from AIDA. I got that role and I stuck with that song. It has never betrayed me. I switch between that and 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again' from POTO when I'm going for roles that required you to use your head voice more.
"People asking questions, lost in confusion. Well I tell them there's no problems, only solutions."
~The one and only John Lennon
I try to find different songs that fit the role I want, but a LOT of people I know use "Stars and the Moon" from Songs for a New World. It is a great song, but it's tough to do if you only have 16 bars.
yeah i used 'I'm Not Afraid' once for an audition. It was for Grease when I played Rizzo. There are a lot of really great audition songs though. It's hard to choose.

I seem to do the same thing before every audition... I freak out and get inspired to find a new song that Ive never heared or done before so I spend a million hours listening to different cast recordings and whatnot. Then the day of the audition comes and I still haven't made a decision so I pick a song and try like mad to learn it perfectly, realize learning a song in a day isnt a good idea, and end up singing "Meadowlark" from Baker's wife. Its ALWAYS my back up, lol.
Funny, no matter what song I sing the always stop me after a few seconds and tell me I can't sing and than these nice men escort me out of the building.
I guess I just haven't found the right song yet.
"Noah, someday we'll talk again. But there's things we'll never say. That sorrow deep inside you. It inside me, too. And it never go away. You be okay. You'll learn how to lose things..."
my three favorites (though i have not had occasion to use them yet- my school had predetermined ones) oh what a beautiful morning razzle dazzle this is the moment
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel
In the past I've used Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries, All That Jazz (not anymore since the movie came out -- it's just TOO overdone) and I'm Always Chasing Rainbows.
I've also used gospel songs on an occasion.
"You're every gay man's wet dream!" ~ MA
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
I always try and pick something that isn't from the scores many people tend to choose (Les Miz, Rent, Phantom, Cats, etc.). It also depends on the show I'm auditioning for. I sing tenor up to a high Gb in chest voice(A on a good day). Here are my last audition songs I used--
--"Everything Old is New Again" from THE BOY FROM OZ got me the role of Tulsa in GYPSY. --"All I Need is the Girl" from GYPSY got me Tommy Keeler in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (REVIVAL VERSION), lost me Jack in INTO THE WOODS though. -- "Cross the Line" from BIG got me Chuck in FOOTLOOSE. -- "My Strongest Suit" (taken up 2 steps) got me Tony in COPACABANA.
I never think you should use the same audition song for everything. You wouldn't sing OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNIN' from Oklahoma! at an audition for a show like "The Full Monty" or BIG BLACK MAN for an Oklahoma audition...it just wouldn't make sense.
And if she'll say, "My darling, I'm yours!" I'll throw away my striped tie and my best pressed tweed, all I really need is the girl...
I've used A NEW LIFE from Jekyll and Hyde, that got me about 3 callbacks for the movie CAMP. And I've also used THE STORY GOES ON from BABY, and I'M CHANGING from Dreamgirls
"And if I'm flying solo.. at least I'm flying free..."
You know, Priest, I thought of using "Memory", but I decided it was a bad idea to go with something that obscure. I didn't want to alienate the directors or anything.
my one signature is NEVER using 'Soliloquy'. other than than. I like to vhange it up a lot, though 'Music of the night' has landed me more than a few roles.
"Underneath" - Jessica Simpson, Matthew Gerrard, Trina Harmon
"I'm learning to dig deep down inside and find the truth within myself and put that out. I think what we identify with in popular music more than anything else is when someone just shares a truth that we can relate to. That's what I'm searching for in my music." - Ron Bohmer
"I broke the boundaries. It wasn't cool to be in plays- especially if you were in sports & I was in both." - Ashton Kutcher
My "classic" audition songs were Corner of the Sky and Empty Chairs/Empty Tables. Now I'm using Old Red Hills of Home, Don't Look Back, Unusual Way, Gimme Gimme, and Someone To Fall Back On.
I seem to sing Endless night (TLK) a lot. It shows my range, and they seem to be impressed w/the end of the song. I can also show a lot of emotion with the song.
I've sung Go the Distance (Hercules) a few times but that song is boring to me now.
Ugh, "Go the Distance" gets really old after a while, that was my song for a whole year.
Currently, I'm using "What Do I Need With Love?" because it has the upbeat/expressive parts, and the slow ballad/emotional parts which you can really show off emotional and vibrato with. Great song in my opinion.
