The Encores! production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes opens May 9 at New York City Center and we've got a first look at video highlights from the production!
Megan and Rachel look and sound excellent. Aaron Lazar's voice always makes me melt. So excited to see this one on Friday!
I've got to say Megan Hilty looks and sounds fabulous.
A cast recording is in the works!
I am so happy for Megan and her success! She truly deserves it. I am glad she finally got out of the Wicked cycle of recycling. New and bigger things.
Looks great!
Maybe Megan had a little frog in her throat, but it's a little growly, non? Looks good, though. Megan's a huge talent, and the rest of the cast sounds great!
That is part of her characterization of Lorelei.
I was thinking that you can't really tell what her approach is to Lorelei from these clips - it almost look like she's playing her relatively straight, not as the delightfully bizarre creature from the novel or the stage libretto.
Is it just that's she's trying so hard not to be Channing or too much like Marilyn, she's shying away from being much of anything at all except Megan Hilty?
Did a straight guy design Rachel's wig?

Newintown are you saying Hilty is playing herself or that she should be trying to be Monroe or Channing, I don't think we really saw enough of her to really tell though, though what we saw really got my hopes up.
The cast looks and sounds great (orchestra too!). This makes me so excited to see Rachel York in Anything Goes. I bet she's going to be a knockout.
random, I wasn't actually saying she should be playing anything in particular.
But, similar to earlier discussions about Margaret White, I find that there's little payoff to a "realistic" approach to a character who was created to be bizarre or over the top.
Also, as I said, these clips don't really show what Hilty's approach really is; if (big IF) she is playing it straight, as a not-very-dumb, not-very-avaricious regular gal (and I'm not saying she is, mind you), I can easily imagine that being far less interesting than a bolder, bigger choice.
*************SPOILER*************
About halfway through 'I Love What I'm Doin' When I'm Doin' it for Love', (:21) the Olympians remove their tank tops and do the rest of the number in just their little black shorts. Sigh.
I found an extended version of Hilty's "Diamonds" performance.

WOW, I'm really sorry that I missed this performance at Encores! Megan sounds much less growly in this recording:

At least there's the cast album to look forward to!
