She is brilliant. Holy cow that voice is perfection...
I'm guessing Kantor is one of those people that those here love to hate. I'll reserve judgement until I see him perform the entire show, but what I enjoy about him (particularly in Rent) is that he's not a hammy actor. He tends to play things very grounded without a "look at me!" delivery style.
I know I'm going to be virtually bitch slapped for this, but that last video made me worry about Betsy. NOT that she doesn't sound good. Her voice is gorgeous. It's almost TOO gorgeous though. The thing that works about Sherie's Cathy is that she is kinda neurotic. While she's awesome, you can totally understand why she isn't getting acting roles. She's quirky and those idiosyncrasies come through. I feel like Betsy is almost so pretty and so talented and so divine that you won't be able to buy that she isn't getting jobs. She doesn't seem neurotic enough to me. And obviously it's just a rehearsal video, but I hope that she gets a little more of an edge to her for the actual show.
That's much better.

Why is the tempo so slow?
I know I'm late to the party, but my god was I bowled over by this show! I had little familiarity with it before yesterday but immediately downloaded the OCR when I got home...now that must have been a dream to see those two live! That said, Wolfe and Kantor were simply exquisite! In the past I've found Wolfe rather milquetoast, but not so in this. The strength of her voice is quite impressive, but more impressive still is the character and color of her voice. Kantor was simply a dream...totally charming and sympathetic (ya, I adored Wolfe, but I was on Jamie's side pretty much the entire time, and that mostly had to do with Kantor's performance).
Still walking on air thinking about this show. I caught this and Matilda during the same week and while the latter I found to be just ok (cute and great for kids...but not my taste at all), I became a devotee of The Last 5 Years after Sunday's matinee.
I hope to catch it again once more before it closes!
I wonder if anyone has seen both this production and the one at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA. I thought the Signature production was terrific, with nice direction by Aaron Posner, and great performances by James Gardiner and Erin Weaver.
