Just wondering is his name below the title or not? Has he been petitioned as lead or featured, and if he's nominated does he have a shot at winning either?
So is Bertie Carvel featured?

I was actually thinking about this a few hours ago. I say featured, and I'd bet my life he'll be nominated. I'd also be very surprised if he didn't win.

The only thing that points to leading is that is what he was nominated for and won in London. It will make for a VERY interesting race should he be included in leading.

Who are his biggest competitions if he was put in leading? I'd say he'd still have a good shot at winning leading... The Oliviers have strange move sometimes with their categories, for example:
- Maureen Lipman was nominated for best actress for Mrs Meers in Millie (she was pitted against her Millie), whereas Harriet Harris won the Tony for featured actress on Broadway.
- Hannah Waddingham was nominated for best actress for her Lady of the Lake in Spamalot, and Sara Ramirez won the Tony for featured actress on Broadway.
- Haydn Gwynne was nominated for best actress in London and then she was nominated as featured actress on Broadway for Billy Elliot
- Leigh Zimmerman was nominated for best actress for Ulla in The Producers in London and then Cady Huffman won the Tony for featured actress on Broadway
The Oliviers only have one category for supporting roles in musicals, strangely, and so they rarely have two actors nominated in that category for the same show (although it has happened - 2010, 2008, 1999, etc.) which is another reason why Carvel was bumped up to best actor; also, he was the breakout star of that show, and it would have been strange not to have him in the leading category.

Billy Porter has a pretty firm stronghold on Lead Actor in a Musical for KINKY BOOTS. The MATILDA producers would be wise to keep Carvel in Featured, where he'd virtually be a lock.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

^ Agree 100% with you. It's where the likes of Brian Bedford should have been for Importance, and arguably Danny Burstein for Follies.
I think Carvel and Finneran (Annie) are wise to stay in featured.

somethingwicked, I've been thinking the exact same thing. I personally hope Carvel will be put in Featured (a) because I think the role belongs in featured and (b) because I hope Carvel and Porter don't have to go up against each other.

Unless they win a petition for something out of the ordinary (ie want him to be considered for leading) then we often don't know.
Chances are this will fall under: all other considerations apply to standard practices.
Since it hasn't opened yet, we won't know until the next/last meeting to determine these variations from standard.

Anthony Warlow and Rob McClure are competition for Leading.
Brandon Victor Dixon, Stark Sands, and Matthew James Thomas are billed below the title but will end up being Leading.
The strongest competition for Featured will be Billy Porter. Unless the producers foolishly try to push him into Leading. Porter, as a Featured role, is strong competition to Carvel.

Also, will Finneran win her third Featured Tony? Reminds me of Audra winning 4 Featured Tonys before claiming her fifth gong finally for leading actress...

To be truthful, ANYONE that actually lands a nom has a chance to win, no matter how slim it may be.

I'm confused. How is Billy Porter's Lola a supporting role? Unless the show has changed radically from Chicago, I really feel like he had equal - or very close to it - stage time with Stark Sands. And, unlike the film, I feel that the character of Lola is considerably beefed up to the point where it should be leading. Or maybe he really was just so outstanding that overshadows my actual recollection of the show...

I predict that Bertie will be considered Lead. He'll face fierce competition from Billy Porter (who won't win), Rob McClure (who should win), Brandon Victor Dixon (who shouldn't even be nominated) and Jim Norton (who should also score a Featured nod for his sideburns).

Such a shame Finneran's Hannigan didn't work out. I would've thought she was a lock for a Tony when that casting was announced...
Bertie's Leading actor win would match Matilda's hopeful Best musical win nicely.
It actually makes sense for Bertie to be considered lead, since the show has no other potential leading actor (they can put Wormwood in featured then comfortably)... that's also why he was considered leading actor in London.

Billy Porter does NOT have a lock on the award. I absolutely love him, but he was horrendous when I saw Kinky Boots a few weeks ago. Bertie is going to get RAVES, so the producers would be smart to petition him into the leading category, where he would almost certainly win.

The problem is that Trunchbull is the main Villan, and is a big part of the show. HOWEVER, when it comes down to actual stage time it should be considered featured.
I say though that leading actor will be between Billy Porter and Rob Mclure. I love both but believe that Rob should win. His performance was one of the best i have ever seen. But i think it will be hard for Rob to win because Chaplin closed in January, where Kinky Boots is still open, and Billy is more prevalent in the voters minds. If Chaplin was still open, Mclure would have been a lock.
I think it is the same as last season with Danny Burnstein and Steve Kazee. While Steve was amazing, Danny Burnstein was brilliant, and gave a better performance. But Follies had closed a little while before, so he didn't have as much of a chance as he would have if Follies was still running.

i was just going to say that John Bolton should be nominated, but he wont. it was a limited run of a Christmas show, and there is a lot of competition this season
