OK, I have to say it: Elaine Stritch. I mean, she'd be totally different than anything Angela Lansbury came up with, and I think rather exciting. And before the whole, "She just plays drunk," comes up, shut up. I don't care. Let her do the damn role.
We don't think Lansbury will extend her contract and last the entire run?
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
How long is Angela Lansbury with the cast? I was under the impression it was going to be for a while and wasn't planning to see the show until April when I'm in the city for "Anyone Can Whistle." Will she still be on then, or should I get tickets for sooner? (Or is this just a speculation thread and I'm reading it wrong?)
I hope Ms. Lansbury a long and healthy run. If she doesn't renew her contract;however, I would love to see Maggie Smith or Glynis Johns take on the role.
I suppose I must be naive, but I never heard of such a thing. At first I thought I may have just misunderstood and that this thread meant who was going to be next to portray Mme Armfeldt in possible other productions, but clearly it must mean this very one. It would be awful, at least to me, if someone replaced her, because I just assumed Angela would be Mme Armfeldt for the entire run of the play, however long that will be. I mean, she didn't play Leona Mullen and Madame Arcati for only part of the run, and then another actress took her place. Maybe this one is different? Maybe it's just that I don't understand about contracts and all of that. Oh, well. Just putting in my two cents worth. Also, I just remembered that this DID happen when Angela was doing the revival of Sweeney Todd, didn't it? She did it for a while, then another actress replaced her for the remainder of the run? If this happens with Night Music, well, I think that would be a shame.
Why wouldn't it still be open in April. It's making nearly $1 million a week. Zeta-Jones' contract is until June I believe. I'd imagine they'd stay open until then (and would think Lansbury would extend till then if she's up for it).
she didn't play Leona Mullen and Madame Arcati for only part of the run
I believe both of those productions were limited runs scheduled to run only a few months. DEUCE ran for three months, BLITHE SPIRIT for five. Angie signed with NIGHT MUSIC for November to April: five months.
She's 84. If she doesn't want to sign a year-long contract, I think that is very reasonable. I'm sure if she is still enjoying herself and feels healthy enough, she'll extend her contract to June.

Glynis did the role here in LA back in 1991. She was wonderful! But to keep that production open they will need a draw. Zeta-Jones is the "tourist" draw and Angie is the theater goers draw. This version of the show would not have made it with out them. They are probably hoping for Tony nominations to keep things up.
Zoe Caldwell was an amazing Armfeldt.....Marian Seldes would have been a great Armfeldt. Since the the rest of the cast is so much younger, maybe a bit younger for Armfeldt (in their late 60's) would be good as well. Lots to choose from there! Judy Dench, Diana Rigg, Catherine Deneuve. I mean after all, we should believe that she could have had any man she wanted. Deneuve would be amazing next to Zeta-Jones.
