Scott Brown of NY Mag is scathing:
"...Awash in a garbage-gyre of expository dialogue pumped in by script doctor/comic-book vet Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, its lavish stage pictures turned to colloidal mush by director Philip William McKinley and choreographer Chase Brock... It's now all too clear how very, very little was there in the first place. ...
In this absence of, well, everything that might constitute drama, Patrick Page's Norman Osborn/Green Goblin has been handed the whole show. ...
No amount of mulch or manure can cover up the music, which is, by far, the show's greatest weakness. ... [Songs] demonstrate, beyond a doubt, that the boys from Dublin never had a damned clue what a musical was or how to dramatize action and emotion in song.
...With Taymor gone, and the ruins of her monstrous Lovecraftian vision overrun by Lilliputians, there's simply nothing to see here, other than the sort of "stunt spectacular" that wouldn't look out of place amidst a backdrop of roller coasters and toddler-vomit. It's a vast emptiness, void even of its animating madness. It shuffles and smiles and subsides, like a good inmate, its hummingbird heartbeat slowed to a crawl. Put your head to Spidey's chest, and all you'll hear is the dull smack of a damp wad of cash hitting the boards. "

That NY Magazine review is actually more entertaining than the show itself. I love when a good, creative individual can sink his/her teeth into something juicy, and, boy, did Spider-Man serve up tons of red meat for critics like Scott Brown. Easily the best review of the 2011-2012 season (so far)!

Brantley remains negative except for Page:
"...I would have recommended "Spider-Man" only to carrion-feasting theater vultures. Now, if I knew a less-than-precocious child of 10 or so, and had several hundred dollars to throw away, I would consider taking him or her to the new and improved "Spider-Man."
...
...Patrick Page, as the megalomaniacal scientist who becomes the evil mutant called the Green Goblin, provides the one reason for adults unaccompanied by minors to see the show.
...
Partly because the performers are masked, you experience little of the vicarious wonder and exhilaration that comes from watching Peter Pan or even Mary Poppins ride the air in other musicals. The effect is rather like looking at anonymous daredevils who have been strapped into a breakneck ride at an amusement park. Come to think of it, Coney Island might be a more satisfying choice. "

Posted: 6/14/11 at 11:56pmThe actor that may have a chance for a nomination is Patrick Page for featured. It's a long way off, it would help him if the show is still in production during nomination season. Updated On: 6/15/11 at 11:56 PM

^ I'm thinking Julie was only there tonight because her PR people probably told her to go and be gracious if she ever wants have any chance of working again. Still, I too would love to hear any comments she has about 2.0.

I recall reading an article about then President Clinton being invited to a private movie showing before the film's release. The young staff running it were so exited he was coming. He ate loads of popcorn and then slept through the movie, woke up at the end and declared it had been terrific, to the bemusement of the staff.

As someone who used to trek down to 43rd St years ago at midnight to buy a Friday TIMES for the BWay reviews, this is just boring. But I would be interested if anyone under 30 knows what one of the reviews said: "tunes that play like U2 B-sides"
means. If you've done JERSEY BOYS you are eliminated.
