Spotted Celebrities in Audience

When I saw Catch Me If You Can, there was a rather glamorous lady sitting directly in front of me. During the curtain call, someone behind me asked me to pass a note to her, which I did. When I was leaving and meeting up with my friend (who had been sitting in a different row), he asked me what I was discussing with Jane Seymour. (I'm not always great at recognizing celebrities!)

Not in the audience, but I once found myself sitting next to Daphne Rubin-Vega on a train heading downtown. I didn't know if I should say hello, but I did, and mentioned how much I loved her performance in Bernarda Alba, and we had a lovely and substantial conversation. I suspect I made a good impression by not leading with Rent.

Over the years and off the top of my head...Jackie Hoffman at Harry Clarke (telling all within earshot after the show that she would have gone down on all the multiple personalities Billy Crudup portrayed in the play), Nathan Lane seeing Laurie Metcalf in The Other Place, Robert Redford at Master Class (sat right next to him), Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman at Six Degrees of Separation, Jack Nicholson and Angelica Huston at A Lie of the Mind, Diahann Carroll at Torch Song Trilogy, Jackie Onassis and Maurice Templesman at Chicago (when Liza Minnelli was filling in), Kevin Bacon at Closer, Andrew Rannells at Suffs, Celeste Holm at Hair, Jill Clayburgh at The Merchant of Venice (the last two at the Delacorte), Susan Sarandon at Three Days of Rain, Liza Minnelli and Candace Bergen at Lydie Breeze, Andrew Cuomo at Dog Day Afternoon, Tony Shalhoub at Spamalot among others. I saw Oprah at something but I don't remember what.

Can't believe I didn't mention my Sondheim spottings first. (I will turn in my card!) I first saw him at the curtain call of the Encores! production of "Merrily We Roll Along" (I cried). The next time he sat 2 rows directly in front of me for the first preview of "Into the Woods" at the Delacorte. The third time was at ticketing going into a show.

I have met and become friendly acquaintances with a number of people. I was having a drink at the 9th Avenue Saloon one night. Looked out the window and there was Andre DeShields talking to a homeless person outside. I was headed out for a smoke and ended up talking to him for a good 20 minutes. We bumped into each other a few other times and chatted. Bumped into Lillias White on 8th Avenue and struck up a nice conversation with her. Always seemed to bump into Taylor Trensch, who always gave me a hug and chatted. Am friends now with Analeigh Ashford (We have a Denver connection) I met Sierra Boggess in Denver when "The Little Mermaid" premiered here and we connected when I moved back east while it was in previews on Broadway and became acquaintances.

I walked Henry Winkler from a theater to 8th Ave. to hail a cab. He was pretty funny. He said he forgot how to do it!

I have found a lot of celebs I have met outside of the theater have been pretty nice. And you can kind of tell if you should speak to them. I was alone in a lobby with Bernadette after a celebration of life event/service. It was not the time to say "I loved you in...". But it was one of the most memorable moments of my time back there. We acknowledged each other briefly but it was obvious she was a bit emotional. It was just so, I can't explain it really, but I was seeing the human side of someone I was a big fan of and was standing there for 10 minutes with her in silence. Her assistant came back with an item she left in the theater and they whisked out to a car.

My list goes on and on. A lot of people I just ended up being around as opposed to spotting them.

I need to add one more! After seeing the last revival of Pippin, I was hanging out outside of the Music Box Theater (not really stage-dooring, but maybe looking to see who came out), and I struck up a conversation with a somewhat older gentleman who was also waiting there. My best theater friend just had this weird smirk on his face as this gentleman and I talked about how much we loved the production. At some point the older guy said, "you know, I once played the part of Pippin," and I suddenly realized, much to my chagrin, that I had been talking to John Rubinstein the whole time. My friend had realized it the whole time, too. The three of us all enjoyed a vigorous laugh! (For the record, John Rubinstein is an amazingly humble and engaging conversation partner.)

I was walking to a matinee of Porgy and Bess at the Rodgers, and my dad clocked Valerie Harper in the breezeway of the Marquis Theatre, in a t-shirt and shorts wearing little make-up. She then sat a row behind me at Porgy and Bess by herself. Later the same day, on my way out of the evening performance of Once, Harper came out of the Booth after seeing Other Desert Cities, with her make up and hair all done up, in a beautiful blue dress as if she just stepped off a red carpet.

Not at a show, but when I was waiting for the Avenue Q lottery to start, I was pacing the sidewalk, and bumped into a blonde woman, who when I apologized for bumping into her, realized it was Charlotte d'Amboise on her way to A Chorus Line.

Edie Falco walked passed me in the crowd as we were both exiting End of the Rainbow.

Anna Wintour at the Lost Boys this past Wednesday night.

Sat next to Jesse Tyler Ferguson at Marjorie Prime.

When I went to the post-pandemic reopening performance of The Lion King I sat across the aisle from Gloria Steinem. Kristin Chenoweth was also there.

When I saw Merrily We Roll Along downtown I was standing near the box office waiting for my friend and I had the thought, "That lady kind of looks like Margo Martindale". And then I heard her pick up tickets for Margo Martindale. Oh.

Angela Lansbury sat behind me at "The King & I" at Lincoln Center. The Sunday matinee of "A Little Night Music," Bill, Hillary, Chelsea and husband Marc attended. When they walked in, the entire theatre started to applaud. On the way out of the theatre, B&H were shaking people's hands and chatting. I was able to shake both of their hands. :)

Barbara Walters was next to me at "Something Rotten." Kim Zimmer was a few rows ahead of me at "Hadestown." Spoke with her before the show, and she was so nice, and so funny.

Isaac Mizrhahi sat right in front of me at "Matilda." He texted all of Act 1, and left at intermission

Andrea Martin & Debra Monk were in the next row at "Just In Time." Gayle King was in front of me at "Oklahoma."

Most recently, Victoria Clark was a few rows behind us at "Beaches."

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body
