Go see it, its amazing. This is not a review, because i'm not good at typing them...so i'll leave that to somebody else.
But i will say that being in that audience was like being in a SEX ED class...there were old people frowning upon the subject matter..and all the kiddies were giggling away...oh! and when the homosexuality parts kicked in....oooooh, don't even get me started...some people. just rude...why ruin the experience for others, tickets are expensive these days too....so, kindly, SHUT UP.
anyways....go see the show, and have an open mind!

well, we had people RUSHING for the exits at intermission. for one. that was funny.
i was sitting next to some A-Holes...who were cracking adolescent sex jokes about the show. Using characters names. "Melchi's gonna hit it." "Dude, is he really f-kin' her?" stuff like that...ya know, stuff said at moments in the show, that would make you wish you were back in the OFF-BROADWAY theatre, where people are a little more behaved and less mainstream.
Then i sat next to some old ladies who were complaining about the masturbation scenes....without spoiling the show, thats all i'm going to say...i don't wanna ruin a good thing.
but i did see Duncan and the lyricist/bookwriter enjoying themselves all night...especially after intermission, they were all smiles...
as for merchandise...shirts, and shirts...and more shirts...that's it...and the Spring Awakening play script. As is non-musical.

No windowcards?
I'm seeing the show on Saturday afternoon. I'm glad you enjoyed it... I've really been looking forward to seeing "Spring Awakening", and to hear some actual opinions on the show, i'm super-excited! And it's great to hear that the show includes so many taboos... even though many people will scoff and crack immature jokes, i do believe that it will have a profound affect on the majority of the people who see this musical (at least i hope it does!).
P.S.~ Really?! Nothing even RESEMBLING a souvenir program?!?!

well, i'll try...i feel inspired.
The whole youth ensemble is amazing. and quite inspiring. They all standout and are very good actors. I love how each cast member took their individual characters and brought them to life. you can see them living in their characters skin. the ensemble sits on stage, so you always see them...and there they are...still in character, and their character choices were great!..it was neat, they never turn off, for a second...young actors, but very mature.
I found Lea Michele (Wendla) to be so-so. good actress. She didn't stand out to me that much...her voice is very beautiful, but i was distracted by how much she looks like Idina, so my mind would wander when it came to her.
Jonathan Groff and John Gallagher were a great pair. I must admit i didn't really understand the depth of the friendship between their characters, Moritz and Melchior...but i gave it a benefit of a doubt and sat back and enjoyed myself. Their voices are AMAZING. More so Gallagher than Groff, my opinion. Gallagher really rocks out on stage, and you can tell he's loving every minute, and he goes somewhere up there on stage. Moritz comes to life. "Don't do sadness" is a great number.
And i love what they did with the two adults. I love how they change character, in and out of the show. Both male and female adults take on roles of parents and teachers. Its just great work....and it never throws you off...the direction i guess what great, because i was able to follow along with them without getting lost. And both actors were great for being emotionally available to dramatic scenes and their comedic timing was also stellar.
I tried.

I just got back as well. Second row center student rush tickets that i bought at 6:00 no problem.
The show was great. I had only heard the two songs online, but I still loved the rest of them. Groff and Michele were both excellent, as was the rest of the ensemble. My favorite had to be Stephen Spinella, however. A truly great actor.
I only heard one gasp from behind during the homosexual part. But the part that made me mad was that the entire audience was laughing during the "beating" part between Melchior and Wendla. I don't want to give anything away but if you saw it off-Broadway you'd know it isn't something to be laughed at.
Yes, they did have windowcards.
I was wondering if the cast every came down close to the audience. At the Atlantic, they came down the front of the stairs to the stage and stood right in front of the audience for the final song. I assume the characters still use the mics. How did that go over?

OOOO I'm so glad that you enjoyed the ensemble! My friend Robert Hager is one of them and he'll be so glad to hear that you appreciated their choices and presence! Yeah I think I'm def gonna go next Friday. Based on how you saw them, would it be too distracting to like practically be sitting next to him the whole show on the stage seats? Interesting what you had to say about the boys friendship as well. I'm suprised to hear that the audiences are so vocal! Was there a big standing ovation and encores like last night?

Ugh. I haven't seen the musical yet, but I have seen the play. I thought that was one of the most heartbreaking scenes. I know that people only laugh at those situations because they feel awkward, but it's still completely inexcusible.
Hah..I think Moritz is my new dream role, if only so I can rock out to my two favourite songs I have heard thus far "Bitch of Living" and "I Don't Do Sadness" which I am obsessed with.
Glad to hear its not watered down at all for the Great White Way...and glad to hear it is sparking strong audeince reactions. I think we need more musicals that have the power to do that...even if that means people walking out.

Having not been around the theater scene when it first started, I'm curious: are the reactions described similar to the reaction to Rent?
Sounds wonderful. This show is most definately on my "must-see" list.

The cast was called on for the curtain call and then two encores afterwards.

RENT is WAY tame compared to this.
The version of the play that they're selling... who translated it? Just wondering.

For those who have seen it... what's the theatre like? Big, medium, small house? How does it translate to a larger Broadway house? I have 7th row center orchestra seat tickets for early January. Are these good seats for this theatre/show?
Hmm.... maybe I'll try to pick up a student ticket this weekend... sounds interesting.

Thanks for the review! I'm so excited to be seeing this next week!
I think this is the most exciting new show to be on Broadway in a long time.
I haven't been this excited since Caroline, or Change.
