re: Stephanie J. Block's next role?

It probably would not be a good career move for her to be replacing a role originated by sutton foster.

What about Motherhood? She should take a break and have a baby with Sebastian!

re: Stephanie J. Block's next role?

If Kelli O'Hara wasn't returning I'd love to see her as Nellie.

Motherhood sounds like a great role for her. No critic bashing or Tony snubs.

re: Stephanie J. Block's next role?

She played her a while back ( maybe in college or regional?)
It's on YouTube and she's actually pretty good!
Just search stephanie j block south pacific
It's some great old footage

re: Stephanie J. Block's next role?

She has played Nellie before. There's a clip on YT. She is vocally alllllllllllll wrong for it. She sings everything like she's a proper British woman. And proper Nellie ain't.

re: Stephanie J. Block's next role?

I can honestly see Block as a Roxie Hart playing roxie EXACTLY like Judy.

A mentally weaker character that by the end is a stronger woman and has come full circle.

But other than that I dont know what I can see block doing thats on now...? Maybe Nellie from South Pacific..

Block is so good though I dont see why she isint originating more roles.

It doesn't matter who originated the role. It doesn't seem like a fit for her.

If she was a great fit for the role, I don't think it would be a bad career move for her just because Sutton Foster originated it.

re: Stephanie J. Block's next role?

Saveusmike: Stephanie J. Block originated roles in The Pirate Queen and 9 to 5, which are flops.

The only shows she was in that have been a success are the Boy From Oz and Wicked.

She was the original choice for Elphaba, but ended up in Wicked's ensemble and understudied Idina Menzel in the pre-Broadway San Francisco production. She probably would have transferred with the show to NYC, but chose to do The Boy From Oz instead. Eventually, she was a replacement Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway. Prior to that, she originated the role on tour.

And, yes, I was wrong about Boy From Oz being a flop. Judging by the shows she has done, I wouldn't exactly call her a flop magnet.

I love her as Nellie in those youtube clips. I wouldn't mind if she took over on Broadway, though I guess it would have to be after Kelli leaves again.

re: Stephanie J. Block's next role?

I was most fortunate to see Stephanie and James Anest in South Pacific at the Cabrillo Music Theater in Thousand Oaks, Ca in 1997, the basis for the Youtube clips. She was a superb Nellie both vocally and acting wise, every bit as good as Kelli O'Hara. Although not as lavish as the current revival, this production used a 30 piece orchestra and both Stephanie and Anest sang the score beautifully. At 36 now, she is the same age as Mary Martin was when she originated the role in 1949 and I would love to see Stephanie play Nellie again.

The Boy from Oz was a hit (thanks to the leading man, of course).

blaxx is absolutely correct. The Boy From Oz recouped its investment.

Does Stephanie's main income come from theatre?

re: Stephanie J. Block's next role?

I knew it was popular because of Hugh Jackman, but wasn't aware it recouped it's investment. Thanks for correcting me on that.

At some point Stephanie has to play Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. That would win her a Tony no contest.

Oh, she has nothing on Debra Monk.

Personally, I'd love to see her in Mamma Mia, though she seems a bit too young for the role. She was definitely one of the best Elphabas I've seen. Second only to Idina. And even if the show was terrible, she was fantastic in Pirate Queen. If she were to be a replacement in a current Broadway show, I could definitely see her as Diana in Next to Normal.

As much as I adore SJB, I could not see her playing Diana in N2N.
