Link!?
Streep wouldn't touch Donna with a 10 foot pole.
*edit. nevermind. I didn't see the word MOVIE. oops. *
Meryl Streep as Donna?
My GOD.
Next we'll have Ben Kingsley starring in the film version of HR Pufnstuf. Julianne Moore, Brad Pitt and Charlize Theron in the forthcoming movie adaptation "Three's Company."
I'm sure she'll have fun with it, but she's a tad overqualified for the job.
Still... I can't WAIT for "method ABBA."

Meryl Streep Joins Mamma Mia!
Source: Variety January 11, 2007
Less than 24 hours after Variety announced that theatre director Phyllida Lloyd would be directing a movie based on the hit Broadway musical Mamma Mia!, they have broken the story that Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep is set to star in it. Lloyd, who directed the original "Mamma" in London as well as its Broadway incarnation, will make her feature directing debut on the pic, which will be shot in London and Greece.
Streep will play the rebellious single mother of a bride-to-be who never met her father. The daughter invites three likely paternal candidates to her wedding, and the ensuing conflict triggers the performance of 22 Abba hits including "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me" and "The Winner Takes It All."
The crowd-pleasing musical has played in 130 cities around the world and had grossed $1.6 billion since its 1999 opening. Casting of Streep adds a level of prestige and comes at a time when the actress is coming off a the boffo mainstream pic playing the boss from hell in Fox 2000's comedy The Devil Wears Prada. An accomplished singer, Mamma Mia! will be Streep's first full-blown musical after singing in Postcards From the Edge and Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion.
The scariest part to me is that I understood she turned down Mrs. Lovett in the Sweeney Todd film because she couldn't clear her schedule to do it.
...so now she's doing "Mama Mia!" instead?
Although maybe Meryl prefers a sunny vacation in Greece to a sound stage with an oven full of body parts.
EDIT: I just pictured her belting out "The Winner Takes It All."
I'm...
Wow, she must really need a Greek vacation...
hmm...half excited...but this could be good.
i think she would be better as Tanya though
Mamma Mia as a movie. Meryl Streep starring. One legitimizing the other. Wouldn't it be an ironic riot if this is the movie that gets her another Oscar? "Streep Wins 87th Oscar for Movie Musical! Film at 11:00..."
I'm bored already. Especially when I scroll down and see Tracey Ullmann in the 9-5 reading. Why wouldn't they have gone with her for MAMMA MIA!
Of all the great musicals that could be put on film THEY CHOOSE THIS?

Streep isn't 40 anymore but she's blessed with a fantastic voice. I'm not a fan of the show but I love to see the movie with Streep!
She didn't do Lovett because she couldn't control how she looked -- but for Donna she'll be pretty. But she is way too old for this.
I can't imagine she's that vain. It doesn't make sense, based on the films she's already made.

"Wouldn't it be an ironic riot if this is the movie that gets her another Oscar?"
What would be ironic about that?
The use of the word "ironic?"
That's the best I can come up with.
I feel like she is definitely too old for this movie. How is the storyline supposed to work, when she cannot be passed off as a forty year old, yet Donna was supposed to have Sophie when she was 20 and there is a big deal about Sophie getting married young at the age of 20. It's kind of hard to picture that with Meryl Streep.
Here's a really wildly crazy thought...
...they'll CHANGE the script and character for the movie!
GASP!!!
It's going to be an adaptation of the stage show. They will tailor the film to HER.
Meryl Streep doesn't have to fit the Broadway costumes to get the part.
Sheesh!
Why not? I think she'll have a campy blast.
I'll nominate Mandy Moore for Sophie
Maybe she'll team up with her old buddy Cher, who would be an AWESOME Tanya! (That would make me explode since Tanya is my favorite charactor and Cher is a goddess!)
best12bars, I understand that shows are adapted to film all the time, but the BASIS of the show is that Donna was a young mother raising Sophie on her own and now Sophie is doing totally the opposite of Donna. I just don't see it with Meryl.
All you have to do is remove the word "young" and you have an adaptation.
