"Who is the audience for a big-budget Barbra remake of Gypsy?"
The answer is Barbra. She's her own audience. Didn't you see Yentl? It was in the closing credits. Starring, written by, directed by, produced by, financed by, and audience.

"I'm actually really hoping that this is true - I'd love to see a modern take on Gypsy."
Yea, cuase that Bette Midler version is so oooold.
And she is too damn old. There isn't enough tissue paper or vaseline to make her look like the mother of young children.

This is Barbra we're talking about. She played 50 year old Dolly when she was 27. She played 18 year old Yentl when she was 40. If she wants to do it, she'll find a way.

Why not wait until there is a great Mama Rose and then make the film?
Babs would is only going to make a great Grandma Rose.

No, it's not. She's wrong for the part at this time (or any other, frankly). But a 70-year-old Rose is preposterous.
I'm a huge Meryl Streep fan, but if she was announced today as playing Scarlett O'Hara in a remake of Gone With the Wind, I'd have the same allergic reaction.
Both are wonderful talents. Both GWTW and Gypsy are terrific properties. Just don't put A and B together, please.

The caveat of course being that she presumably will be playing the role as a fifty year old and the real debate is whether we feel she will be able to pull that feat off.
For what its worth i think it would also be pretty easy to restructure the script to make the part with the kids some kind of flash back if the main concern is Streisand playing mother to ten year olds- the kids are only in two major scenes

I'm quite interested as to Laurents will "allow" to direct the film since they apparently gave Sondheim and Laurents some major clout in regards to the film. Clearly we know both Rob Marshall and Sam Mendes are out of the question, Tom Hooper is also out (per Mike Flemming), so who'll face the task of directing this piece for the third time?
It'll never happen in a million years, but I'd love for John Cameron Mitchell to be involved as a director.
I wonder who's in their short list for Louise and Herbie. I like the idea of Dustin Hoffman for Herbie, give me Natalie Portman as Louise and I'll be a happy boy.

Do you really think they're going to cut and/or restructure those scenes, MB?
Exactly who will they be pleasing if they do that? (besides Streisand.)
And she does not look 50. Sorry. Especially on film in a movie theatre. Even with gauze or burlap or vaseline on the lens.
It's Mame all over again.

Who knows what they'll do to the script but assuming shes the reason this remake Is happening i assume they will craft it in a way to make her casting the most plausible. I personally dont think they need to be a slave to the stage script (As the Midler script does) especially if the original writers are involved...
Of course shes too old and arguably not at all right for it, but i maintain the role is like Hamlet and its becoming more about the exercise of seeing the actor take on the role. On that level i do find Streisand taking on the project irresistable.
And i doubt she would be the final Rose on film either- there are more than 100 filmed versions of Hamlet...

God, some of the people on these boards are mind-numbingly pretentious. Yes, I'm seventeen, but I'm also a professional actor - I'm perfectly qualified to talk about musical theater with you, regardless of how old and pompous you may be.
Gypsy is old to me because it came out the year I was born. I want to see a MODERN remake with MODERN cinematography.

Too old or not, Barbra Streisand is the only genuine STAR left that has people talking, pro and con. Would a hack like Patti LuPone create this international buzz if she were to star in a film?
Like her or not, Barbra is the last star and when she goes fags will realize what they have lost. Unless they are stupid enough to think that GLEE will take her place. . .
I say good luck to all and let the film be a commercial and artistic smash so you snotty pricks will shut up.
And if you can do any better, then go make a movie.

I gotta say, I'm so excited for this movie. As was pointed out before, the role has become something that goes beyond the age of the character. I don't care if she's 90 and wants to do it or how much vaseline they rub on the camera. This is a true musical legend in an iconic role that (even the haters know) will be regarded as one of the great screen performances of all time. And I can say that in all confidence without the script even being written yet.
But I still hope it's in 3D.

And you are still a child. You can't even buy cigarettes legally.
You are not even qualified to wipe my butt.
And fflagg,
The day Patti is a hack is the day you are not bitter.

Posted: 3/21/11 at 10:37pmI bought cigarettes when I was 17. I had to blow the guy behind the counter, but that's beside the point. You don't want to know what I had to do for the vodka. (I won't tell you but it involved the words Hot & Carl...)
