Out of curiosity, what are these great musicals that are totally original? Everything I can think of that's traditionally highly regarded is based on some other existing material (excepting maybe The Music Man).

Wouldn't Dear Evan Hansen be on this list? For a second I was going to ask about Hamilton though that was actually based on Ron Chernow's biography. So I guess it was based in part on "some existing material." But DEH is, I believe, completely original.

In addition, there was a book written by James Haskins published in 1994 called "The Scottsboro Boys" which I'd argue would put it in the same category as Hamilton. Original enough for me,but based (at least in part) on some preexisting material.

If you were responding to what I wrote, I said "If we advocate for truly original musicals, we advocate against most of the greatest musicals." And then, as night follows day, we get a list of musicals that the poster subjectively thinks are great which just mucks up the subject.
