Interesting to hear Patricia Neal did a good job as the stage mother, because I thought Inga Swenson is so melodramatic in the film one wonders if she knew this was a movie.
So did Swank get poor reviews? I had no idea that there was a production designed as a vehicle for her in 2003 until I read the other thread, so I'm really interested to hear all this info about it.
Pill is a pretty underwhelming choice, IMO, but I can see her doing well. Breslin is the one I'm very interested in, I can see her being brilliant, but it could also backfire. Hopefully, it'll be the former, I'm definitely rooting for her.
Screw Scarlett Johansson, THIS is the revival I'm really excited about.

Alison Pill is too soft and girlish to play Annie Sullivan. It needs an actress that can put forth a more steely performance.
What are you talking about? Did you see Inishmore at the Lyceum or reasons to be pretty off-Broadway? Or even Blackbird? The last thing Pill should be criticized for is being soft and girlish.

"Please- Helen has ONE LINE. I think Breslin can handle it."
I dunno. Not all actresses can handle the part.

First thought I had was "who is going to be playing Anne?" Glancing at the pictures, I thought the article was going to state that Abigail and Alison were going to be sharing the role of Helen.
Helen and Anne were about 12 years apart, and Alison and Abigail are about 11 years apart so I suppose it's not too far fetched... but wow, Alison looks so young to be playing Anne!!! That's my initial thought anyhow. It will be interesting to see if she can come across as older.
I'm excited for this show to return!

Annie (b. 1866) was 14 years older than Helen (b. 1880), and they both had just turned 21 and 7 respectively when the action in the play takes place (c. 1887).

Oops, my bad. I had misread Anne's birth year as 1868.
Thanks for the correction and info about when the play starts. What year does the play go until?

Posted: 10/28/09 at 4:52pmI've always really admired Pill's work onstage. I think she'll do a great job in this part even if she's not a celebrity. It's the acting that counts!

I am really excited for this! I think both actresses will do a fantastic job. I was a little worried at first about Pill not being a big name, but I don't doubt her acting abilities at all. Will this be open-ended? The article doesn't mention any closing date so I hope it will be open-ended.
I just can't stand Abigail Breslin. I think she's overrated and is getting these parts because she's new "it" young girl. If this revival was being mounted four of five years ago, we would've seen Dakota Fanning as Helen. I just really don't think she's a great actress. I hope she proves me wrong.
Funny, what you said about Abigail is the exact same way I feel about Dakota Fanning.

"Thats right. One line. And she does nothing else. Its a super easy role."
Well, she has to make sure she doesn't fall off the stage.

Popular: I made a slight error. I consulted my biography and Annie arrived at the Keller home on March 3, 1887, and since her birthday was on April 14, she was not quite 21. Helen (birthday June 27) was just six and remains six for the remainder of the play 'cause the famous water pump scene took place just one month later (April 5), which is when the play ends.

Oh this is terrific!
Abigail is such a superb little actress.
But Im elated to know Pill is back! After her appearance in MILK I was afraid we might lose her to Hollywood... Thank goodness there is always room for her sublime talent here!
