It's true that Steve was there on Tuesday night. We don't know his reaction to the piece though (and we may never know).
By the way, I disagree with most of what Insider2 wrote. Please go and see this with an open mind...you will definitely find much to enjoy.

"The far orch right seats towards the back are considered partial view."
I guess this is a spoiler request, but can someone clarify what would be missed from these seats? When I saw the show, it seemed pretty front and center -- I don't remember a whole lot taking place on the extreme sides of the stage. I would assume you can see the main set piece (the shelves of books) from everywhere.

Posted: 2/19/09 at 1:46pmThe only action that happens on the extreme right of the stage is when one of them is standing at the podium or when they are making the snow angels. However, even those parts of the show aren't *extreme* right, so I feel like every seat would be full view...

My experience last night was truly incomparable. AA-108. To be enveloped by such beauty and realism and wonder. Something special, something I'll never forget. I want nothing but the best for this piece. It deserves to be here, playing to crowds, mending hearts, and opening minds. It's a change o' pace from the everyday musical, and that's why I think it such a treat to have bestowed upon us. Nevermind the performances of Mr. Chase and Mr. Gets - which, by the by - are both exceptional. Review to follow. With all of my love to the Booth tonight.

I also saw this show last week and LOVED it. I wish it all the luck in the world, tonight and forever!
And funny enough, I'm not worried about the reviews. Something tells me that the critics are going to love it, too. But will that be enough to keep this little show alive?
I hate to pass this news along, but I have friends in the biz who told me they're basically passing out free tickets on the street so they can fill the house tonight.
Now I wish I could be there to cheer them on. GO STORY OF MY LIFE!!!

Posted: 2/19/09 at 3:52pmI had some friends who sat far right in row O and they couldn't see the right snow angel. So although not taking away from the action, they said it was annoying.

Posted: 2/19/09 at 3:55pmI really disliked the show but I'm still hoping for the best. It's always wonderful to see an original musical (good, bad, or indifferent) get good reviews and do well. And TSOML, my personal opinions aside, is no different. So break a leg on opening night to the cast and crew and best of luck with the reviews!

Mike, you said,
“I want nothing but the best for this piece. It deserves to be here, playing to crowds, mending hearts, and opening minds.”
But Insider said,
The entire show…is completely static from start to finish. Nothing happens. Everything is TOLD to us.
So if there’s no car crashes, or really good explosions, or lightening quick karate moves, and stuff, how can it be any good, Mike?

The link isn't working right now, but here's a sentence from Linda Winer's review for Newsday:
"It would be lovely to be able to say nice things about "The Story of My Life..."
Yipes.
I'll put up the rest when it comes out.

I'll tell you what, LadyDramaturg, the best thing about any-which theatrical experience is that it's open to interpretation. Opinions are a key component to making the world go 'round, and well, they make life interesting. Some will love STORY, others won't. It's up to the individual to form his/her own stance.

Yeah, LadyDramaturg, that's a mature and well-thought out defense of the show. They should have hired you for PR.
Musicals may not need explosions, forklifts, flying cars- or hell, even three cast members- to be interesting and dynamic, but in now way did Insider suggest that's why he didn't think it was good. To dismiss any criticism is incredibly ignorant, especially when some of his points were valid.

Hey mormonophobic, I was a few rows behind you without realizing it. I was in row B, seat 104.
I enjoyed the show for what it was, a touching story about a childhood friendship that drifts apart. I enjoyed both actors' performances. I thought the set was fantastic. I did find myself wincing a few times though with predictable rhyming lyrics. My favorite moment of dialogue was when they promise to do each others eulogy. "I'll do yours if you do mine."
A pleasant way to spend the afternoon. It was interesting to see Malcolm Gets in another musical where the story is told in a non-linear fashion.

I shouldn’t have been glib; glib is never a good idea. My apologies.
At the very top of the show, as the mask is pulled back to reveal the set, you get a hint of what this play will demand of you: to me, the set represents the kind of pure white background onto which one projects his own interpretations of events.
The characters, rather than “cardboard cutouts,” can be seen as inkblots (on that white background), whose complexity each of us interprets in our own idiosyncratic way. The two men are not shallowly drawn, in my experience; I thought they provided just enough complexity to initiate the process of identification (by the audience member), but not so much that they became individuals so unique that you felt that the story was about “them.” (like Seurat was – that show was about Him.) This show is about Us.
The show is not one of experiencing “what happens,” [so if you wanted things to happen, you’d feel let down]. It is rather, a process you involve yourself in, and make sense of according to the story of your own life.
I can’t think of a musical that accomplished this in quite the deviously sweet way that TSOML has done; but, I haven’t seen every show ever produced, and so maybe I’m not entitled to comment here.
