THE WAVERLY GALLERY Set for Next Season

Next season, Kenneth Lonergan will have another one of his plays making its Broadway debut. This time, it will be The Waverly Gallery, which will star Elaine May with two alums of Lonergan’s works, Michael Cera (This is Our Youth, Lobby Hero) and Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges (Manchester By the Sea).

This is exciting and I love Elaine May BUT, Miss Eileen Heckart was brilliant in this role originally and i think it will be hard to top that legendary perfirmance. That being said, I am excited to see this play again. Deserves to be seen by many more.

Eileen Heckert is dead. If we stopped doing plays every time someone claimed they saw a legendary performance that couldn’t be topped, the canon would be empty. There are lots of people who didn’t see Eileen Heckert in the role who will be more than happy to jump at the chance to see the play, and with a performer of great stature like May, no less.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

AC: I just wanted to note how wonderful Ms. Eileen Heckart was in The Waverly Gallery years ago. I’m excited to see it again next season. Chill out. Didn’t mean that plays should not be revived with other wonderful actors.

I've never heard of this play, but I really love the premise. It reminds me of the kind of stories I like to write (and hope to continue writing).

Michael Cera and Lonergan have a serious show-bromance going on here!

This cast is amazing. And I really like the artwork that was in a recent promo email.

Easily the most exciting cast of the fall, unless NETWORK manages to get a few amazing costars for Mr. Cranston.

Anyone have thoughts on the rear mezzanine seating at the Golden? I’m looking at row G. I was considering popping into the box office the day it opens to grab a discounted $39 seat but if they’re really low quality seats I’d rather wait for rush or TDF. Any input is greatly appreciated!

It feels high because the raking is a bit steep, but the legroom is decent and it’s undoubtedly a full view of the stage. The theatre is small so there isn’t a bad view really in the entire place.

I don't care much for the rear mezz at the Golden, personally. I find that the shape of the theatre makes the rear mezz feel far away, even though the theatre is small. HOWEVER, the Golden often sells rush seats in the rear mezz anyway, and more than likely they'll be around $39. So you might as well just go for it. And it's not like the seats are so bad that they aren't worth it. I complain, but I continue to sit up there for almost every show that plays at that theatre.

FYI, rear mezzanine H 102 is an unusual seat at the top of the stairs that looks straight down the aisle. I bought it for this show because it appears to be the best cheap seat in the theatre.
