I am SUPER excited about this!

As someone who grew up a theater geek, changed focus to rock music in high school & now is starting to embrace theater, again, this is RIGHT up my alley.

I, actually, was just recently digging into the Tommy album in a way I hadn't before. I, no joke, found myself saying, "This is just like modern day internet celebrities".

The lyrics remained pretty much in tact, but Cheryl Freeman's character was credited as The Gypsy on Broadway (and all subsequent stage productions) whereas Tina Turner was credited as The Acid Queen in the film.

I'm excited about this, but cautiously tempering that excitement. Let's be real in that McAnuff's direction can be very hit or miss. He could end up knocking it out of the park again with some truly new concept and staging, it could end up being similar to his revival at Stratford which was really just an update to the tech elements (a safe, but maybe boring choice), or it could end up being a total misfire that elicits a mere yawn. There's really no way to tell for sure with him.

I wouldn’t mind if the revival was the same as the Stratford production which was basically the same as the original with updated tech as mentioned above. I appreciated that since I didn’t get to see the original production.

Also, as far as I know, the Stratford production did not include Tommy hugging and forgiving Uncle Ernie as someone described of the original production. In Stratford Uncle Ernie leaned in for a hug and Tommy kept his arms at his side and refused to embrace his uncle.

Last I heard, it was rumored to succeed American Utopia and come back home to the St. James Theatre for a 30th anniversary revival in spring 2022.
