TONY'S for Woman in White?

So, now that the show is closing, will it have a shot at the tony's? Best musical may be pushing it (still 4 shows to open this season) but what about the cast?
I have seen the show 3 times (guilty pleasure) and I Maria must be a shoe-in for a best actress nom. What about Ball? I am told he missed all of January when the nomination committee were seeing the show. Where does he stand then? Or will he get a nomination for simply being Michael Ball?

I think it has to be nominated for best design.

Thoughts?

I would think that it has to be nominated for all three design catagories. It is such a unique approach, It deserves a nomination.

and I will say right now that my belief is that Friedman will win the tony for best actress, not based on the fact that it is a great role, which it is, but based on the fact that she has been performing this role almost every night while battling cancer. Do I think that she would win the tony if it were not for her physical state? no. I am being honest. but, her bravery and compassion for the theatre will get her the sympathy vote from the voters, and this is such a story of inspiration, that I think she transends (sp?) the catagory and will go home with the tony.

I would LOVE to see Friedman take home the Tony, but sadly I don't think she will. She's practically a lock for a nomination, though. I bet Ball will get a nom as well.

Friedman is the only lock at this point...tho Ball and Score are good bets. The rest of the openings could also fail, and then I'd bet on a Best Musical nom as well.

Now that I know that Michael Ball will be out for the remainder of the run, that puts him much lower on the totem pole for the nomination.

re: TONY'S for Woman in White?

Friedman unfortunately doesn't have much chance to win the Tony anymore. While there is tremendous sympathy and admiration for her, I'm afraid that her story will be old news and somewhat forgotten by four months from now when the Tonys are handed out. We have another dozen shows set to open between now and then and the Friedman saga will no longer be at the forefront of many minds come June.

There's also the fact that the vast majority of Tony voters will not get to see this show before it closes. Roughly a fourth (or perhaps more) of the voters are out of town and only make the trip into New York after the nominations come out -- usually the week or so before the awards so they can go to the dozens of parties that happen, wining and dining them. Plus many of the voters in town never got around to seeing it. While nominees from closed shows have still won a couple of times over the years, it's a very very rare occurrence.

Since it's a weak year for new musicals, WiW will likely get a few nominations -- just to fill out categories if for no other reason. But it's chances of winning any are close to zero. Tony voters hate to "waste" a vote on a show that can't benefit from the award and use it for marketing purposes (please forget about anything you've ever heard referring to the Tonys representing "artistic merit" -- it's all about money. Period).

I would be willing to bet a large sum of money that Ball will not get a nod.

I will bet early that the only nods will go to sets and to Maria.

That's weird to me because it seems like the other major awards shows tend to value artistic merit. At least with the Oscars and whatnot.

Well, have you watched the Tony Awards lately? Personally, I'd like to individually slap every voter who wasted their vote on a piece of sh-t called "Spamalot."

Rentboy, that's a bit naive. Shows and actors benefit all the time from clever marketing and backlash at the Academy Awards ALL the time.

re: TONY'S for Woman in White?

No, but the Oscars really do vote for the right things, I mean, as much as I disliked "Brokeback Mountain", to give "The Producers" or "Rent" a nod or award wouldn't be right. They are a bit more concious of artistic values than the Tony voters (or any other voters actually.)

re: TONY'S for Woman in White?

Also remember the year they gave book, score, and director to Urinetown, but still gave Best Musical to Thoroughly Modern Millie because, even though they didn't think it was the best show (if they did, why did they give all the other major awards to Urinetown), they thought it would be a bigger hit with a wider audience and tour better. (ironically Urinetown recouped in a year and made a healthy profit, while Millie ended up closing at a loss).

And as for the Oscars, crappy films win and get nominates all the time. I can't remember the last time the film I thought was actually the best of the year, won Best Picture.

re: TONY'S for Woman in White?

To clarify, my post was meant to say that Friedman would be nominated, not win, along with a few others if the end of the season is weak, tho Margo makes a good point that it is tough for voters to remember back so long unless there are no other nominees.

Michael Ball Permanently Out of Woman in White

I have a feeling Maria will be the ONLY nomination for this show (and she will not win). If Michael had not been ill for any of the run and if it had lasted longer, I think he would have definitely won the Tony for supporting actor. Now, IMO, he will not get a nomination.

Michael Ball Permanently Out of Woman in White

Well so far I’ve seen THE WOMAN IN WHITE, THE COLOR PURPLE, and SWEENEY TODD. I think that all of the female leads did a great job, however, Patti Lupone and Maria Friedman are the only ones i could see really winning the Tony, given some shows haven't opened yet, but those shows don't really shock me as winners of anything (wedding singer the musical? please.) Lachanze did a good job, but not amazing, I hope she doesn't take home the Tony, she has a long life of performing before her, that is if she sings healthfully, which I’m not even sure she's doing right now, her acting was great though. Patti LuPone is the one I think should win, this would be her second Tony, and she hasn’t been on Broadway in 17 years, and she did an INCREDIBLE job, but, but, I also feel that being the pressure that Maria Friedman had upon her (her health) she did an incredible job, her unique voice and fabulous acting can make this race a little more difficult for the other women.

i hope the Sets don't get nominated because they are terrible in my oppinion....

i still think Leading Lady wise the vote will be between Maria and LaChanze............ Patti is great but she is not a stand out this tony season in my oppinion

Michael Ball Permanently Out of Woman in White

Who ever goes on opening night is able to be nominated for a Tony. IF many of the nominating commette had seen the show then
they should nominate Michael Ball as he did get the best reviews. Maria should also get a nomination. Unfortunately as the rest goes, the play and ALW might suffer as many of these commette are old and do not like anything new or inventive

What the hell does "she has a long life of performing before her" mean?

People keep saying that.

It means nothing.
Nothing at all.

I hope it gets a lot of nominations, i know one Tony voter that walked out during intermission when he saw The Woman in White. This same Tony voter saw Altar Boyz about 30 times! so i kinda lost faith in the Tonys. I hope Maria Friedman and Adam Brazier take a Tony home.

Maria Freidman will not win. There's no way.

Neither will LaChanze.

It will be LuPone, at this point.
