The lyric changes from the west end is throwing me off! They sound great though.

I was wondering why this needed a new cast recording since the one with Tutty/Gift only came out a little over a year ago, but it sounds like the multiple lyrical changes have answered my question.

Nice recording, and very happy to have Christiani’s fantastic performance preserved.

I just don’t understand why they continue to switch the order of the second and third songs on all the recordings when ‘Dad’ is performed before  ‘What’ll it Be’ whenever I’ve seen the show…..

This is a sweet little score with a good amount of treasures - it sits comfortably in the Broadway-pop vein and could very well be the Instagram and TikTok generation's answer to THE LAST FIVE YEARS.

Like I said when I saw this, soft piano over whirring SFX seems to be the prevailing mood, but Buchan and Barne shake things up aptly and appropriately: propulsive city anthems "New York" and "This Is the Place"; the Christmas carol parody-cum-deconstruction "Under the Mistletoe" (the closest the show comes to MAYBE HAPPY ENDING territory, akin to Gil Brentley's material); the delightful shopping-spree snapper "American Express." Some synths and video-gamey noises throughout "On the App" gave me a "Today 4 U" vibe.

I was once again pleased by Tutty and Pitts's vocals, and I too am thrilled that Pitts's vulnerable performance has been captured.

Some very clever rhymes here and there, too.

Overall, good keepsake of a very good show, I hope it gets a bit more attention from this. If this somehow lasts long enough to warrant replacements and they don't simply promote the understudies, I could see a Jessie Hooker-Bailey or Maya Boyd type for Robin if they still want her to be played by an American actress. (It won't happen, but my dream casting is Jonathan Bailey and Olivia Dean in the two roles.)

Because, as noted multiple times in the thread already, several of the songs have been rewritten, with different music and lyrics.

This:

is different from this:

The character has been changed/tweaked.

See also: "This Year."

I actually like the new "What'll It Be" orchestration, it's more stagnant, especially at the start, which clearly represents Robin at an impasse in her life. IMHO the London version sounds a bit too much like a slowed-down "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?", and you can still hear that a bit in the underscoring for the scene lead-up to the song.

Adding "Be Happy," which is a minute shorter (though they may have just omitted some dialogue), and the ending is vastly different. They really did revise the character to make her much more melancholy and struggling much more, which is reflected in the songs.

vs.

(Someone in the reviews thread asked why she didn't want to talk to her grandmother. The Broadway version makes it very explicit. "This Year" does as well, so I'm not sure why it would be a question.)
