Though he is indeed whining, his point-of-view is shared by numerous actors who have started on the stage and would NEVER return due to that 'crazy 8 performances a week schedule". This has also kept some actors from making their Broadway debuts.
Richard Gere, Liza Minnelli and Barbra Streisand are just a trio of actors who have said that they would NEVER return to the stage due to this schedule. Queen Latifah has stated that this is what has kept her away from making her Broadway debut.
I think his diatribe totally explains why he was so flat and uninspired in Cat. Clearly he's not a good enough actor to pretend to be having fun when he's not. So, live theatre is not for every actor. Clearly he's one of those, and it shows in his performance.

Good thing these actors made it in hollywood then...otherwise they would be on welfare. I'd like Terrence Howard to go up to Harlem and talk to one of the hundreds of families whose heads of house work 2-3 jobs to just barely pay the rent and tell them how his 24 hours of work per week is slavery.

Did he ever return to the play? My sister saw it after his supposed return and his understudy played the part.
so **** him and his weird thing for baby wipes.
Did he really call Homosexuals sinners in a public forum?
Yes. There's a past thread somewhere linked to an interview he did long before CAT when he said he believes homosexuals are sinners.

Didn't Mr. Howard read the part of the Bible where Jesus said, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"?
Does he know he is playing one on Broadway?
Tennesee would be throwing a hissy fit if he knew.

Oh, it gets even better, CurtainPullDowner! He also said in an interview (probably the same one) that his views on homosexuality have influenced his "performance": he doesn't believe Brick to be gay and will not play him as such.
Unbelievable. A**hole.
he doesn't believe Brick to be gay
He has read the play, right?
"Not like in movies with whole departments to fluff and puff you."
Fluff and puff? And he's trying to prove he's not gay?
Waah, I'm a famous star that people fall over themselves to cast in things, waah.
It really shows the difference between a person who wants to be an actor and one that wants to be a star.
He did say he doesn't think Brick is gay...the denial of some people. I think he is just pissed that Anika Noni Rose is sweeping the floor with him on that stage every night (since she doesn't miss shows due to exhaustion or diva-esque problems).

How unfortunate. I saw the show a few weeks ago and his understudy was on. It was a Wednesday evening so I assumed maybe he was doing something else for a movie perhaps but apparently he misses a lot of performances. I DID NOT LIKE his understudy at all and could see how Terrence would've played the part (had he been there) but I've also heard from lots of people that he isn't that good, so maybe his "talent" doesn't go beyond the quick cuts of film. And that interview just makes me lose a lot of respect for him. And if his statement(s) about homosexuals is also true than one, why did he agree to come to Broadway and two, why does he feel that his personal beliefs give him the right to change the way he plays a character that wasn't his creation. The text pretty much spells out for him who he needs to be when he's on as Brick. Oh well, I guess he feels he'll have enough fans even after pissing off so many people. what a shame
I read Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with my academic adviser and the two of us saw it together. We both felt that Brick being gay was something that was up for the audience to decide. Mainly because it isn't said point blank in the text. We both felt that it wasn't and that was just Big Daddy's thinking.
As for what Howard said I find that to be appalling. Not just the bit about homosexuality but the part where he talked about being on Broadway and considering it slave work. There was a thread about this in the past and I will say the same thing here that I said there. We all have agreed to do things that we ended up not liking but we handled them in a mature way and decided to suck it up and deal with it rather then whining about it. I would have more respect for him if he said he didn't like working on Broadway and he will never do it again and just leave it at that. No on forced him to do it. It wasn't like anyone was twisting his arm and making him sign that contract. I understand that for a lot of actors the 8 shows a week isn't their cup of tea and thus they don't do it. Fine by me I can respect that. What I can't respect is someone who agrees to do it only then to bitch about it later on.
When I saw it he played the role as if there were a million things he would rather be doing then that show.
If he got nominated for a Tony it would remind me of what happened with the original revival cast of My Fair Lady. The actress who was the lead played the minimum amount of performances required to win the Olivier sp? (On Broadway to get nominated for the Tony you have to do the role opening night. For the Olivier you have to do a minimum number of performances to get nominated) Kerry Ellis went in most of the time and when she won there is footage of Jonathan Pryce putting his head in his hands because she won.

Come on, how would he have time to be in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," let alone read it? You saw how demanding his schedule is. It is slavery! Being paid thousands of dollars for a twenty hours of work a week

Direct Quote from Howard on his role: One of the great things about Brick is that he had no idea that everyone in the household was accusing him of being a homosexual. But when he realizes his father has this idea, it enrages him because he thought that of all people, his father should know. Why can't two men have a deep friendship and let it be respected as something clean and decent? The mendacity of that bothers Brick. He explains that he and Skipper had a true friendship, a true friendship, until Brick's wife Maggie thought they were gay. Brick tels her the relationship is too rare to be normal. But sometimes men are drawn to each other and don't know how to deal with that. So they think, 'I must be gay.' But we hide from the quality that is most prolific, to express love. God is love. And we remain in his image. Only one other angel is made in His image, and that is Jesus, His only begotten son. So why is it we run from love? Why can't men lool each other in the eye with honesty."
This guy is really getting to my last gay nerve.

This thread hurts and angers me on so many levels.
First of all, slave labor? Really? REALLY?! Do you know how many actors, qualified actors could have played this role a million times better for a fraction of his salary?! What a bi*ch!
Second, all the garbage about homosexuals! It's bad enough when your average, every day moron is a bigot; but when a black man, who I can only assume, knows what it's like to be discriminated against throws a stone from that glass house; it's hurts, I don't know why.
I have been a fan of some of Mr. Howard's work on film; after this, I'll never spend a dime to see anything he's in. He's on the list!!!!!! hehe

Is this revival wrapped up yet? I want this schmuck GONE.
So, because he's against homosexuality, he does an injustice to Williams' beautiful text?
And frankly, I don't understand why he's even the famous movie star he is. Have you seen him try and act on film? Jeeze, people! My dog woulda been better in that "I'm a Hustla" movie.

I love that he uses the word "mendacity" so casually now. At least he learned something from Williams.

Let him go. He was the weakest one in the cast, with a tin ear to Williams' lyricism.
Let him go.
