How so?
I think Mayer was expected to win for directing the hit of the season, but Darko’s win foreshadowed Gentleman’s Guide’s dark-horse win for Best Musical. (Ironically, Linda Cho also won the costume design category that year.)

Ah, got it.
What does Michael Greif have to do to win a Tony?

Obviously, you loved Hedwig. It never even crossed my mind that he should win. Of course, I probably loved AGGTLAM as much as you loved Hedwig.
What does BDJ have to do to win a Tony? Someone write him another vehicle!

Also let's not forget there was no award for Best Orchestrations back in the day. I think he well deserved the award.
