The Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program category, for their performance of Answer Me on The Today Show (watch here).

Fun fact - the 2018 Tony nominations were announced while this performance was happening, and the cast learned of all the shows nominations live on air!

I was there - it was freezing, but they really delivered an amazing performance. Glad to see it recognized!

10 Tonys, a Grammy, and now an Emmy. Even a month after closing, The Bands Visit continues to be a wonder. Can’t wait for the tour starting next month!

I'm happy for them. I am. But I think it's bizarre that Broadway casts are winning Emmys for basically doing the same thing they do 8 times a week. (And getting just one award away from an EGOT for the same role.)

To me, an Outstanding Musical Performance should go to something created from scratch for television. But then again, the award was originally called Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program, and since it was created have all been for daytime talk show performances, so I guess it's a weird batch to begin with anyway.

It is indeed weird. Just as weird as Daytime Emmys being presented to web series - and I'm not talking about Amazon and stuff - I'm talking about WEB series.

Agreed with all.

IF the entire show had been produced and telecast, I could see the Emmy recognition; but for what is (in reality) just a commercial? This is a slap in the face of all those people and TV shows who deservedly earned their Emmy.

A Clio is the more appropriate award.

What are you talking about? This wasn’t a commercial. It was a full performance of two songs, and in freezing cold no less. How is it different from any other daytime program musical performance where a singer may be performing their new single trying to sell it?

Good for them! I have the OBCR in my iTunes mix and listen to it on the one morning that I have a lengthy commute. Good stuff!

Watch it again. It was an abbreviated version of "Answer Me", followed by the Overture.

It's not. But there are instances (i.e., SNLs guest musicians) where their performance is specifically designed for TV. Some are pretty creatively designed and executed considering SNL's small space.

I happen to agree with everythingtaboo: "To me, an Outstanding Musical Performance should go to something created from scratch for television." There are examples where this exists - James Cordon's Crosswalk musicals/carpool karaoke, David Letterman's historic Sonny and Cher reunion where they sang "I Got You Babe" (yes, that's an old example), Christmas specials, RENT Live, etc.

I would also point out that there was very little in that Band's Visit promo that creatively used skills typically, or distinctly utilized in television production. The cast was great - but that's because they reproduced what was designed and rehearsed for the theater.
