This is the first time I'm hearing that all those people were banned from lotto.

Wow... Reading some of those messages on the front, as opposed to the real wall, is kinda sad. I mean, "RIP Heath Ledger?" It seems like people are SEARCHING for stuff to write, like they NEED to do it to be a real fan! I think the real wall only certain people can sign is great, a tradition, but 10 thousand "RENT PWNZ!" is just graffiti. WHY in the WORLD the theatre would allow it... it just turns people off, as the minority of over-extreme fanatics always tend to do...

the RENT wall is important cuz so many cast members and crew AND people who have been effected by the show have left messages on how the show has changed them. So why in the world so many people are up in arms about THAT wall is beyond me...but the newer wall..is crap..remove it lol
And everyone saying the Nederlander theater is sorta fit for RENT. RENT is about poverty and struggling, and the theater looks very "Bohemiane" (sp?) Wasnt that done on purpose by the creators of the show? I might be wrong tho

If they allow folks to mark the walls up, would they allow someone in with a cleaning rag and some Windex?

Right, I get that. It was more of a rhetorical, "why on earth would that be the logic?" question. If they're allowing one thing that is clearly a form of vandalism, why are they punishing people for another thing that is technically also vandalism? If the answer is truly that the producers like it, well... no comment.

It will take an hour to paint over, its no big deal, think of the job offer for the young person who gets to paint over it....see the people doing the graffiti are giving people jobs.....they should be applauded lol

I think it's awful that people really believe you have to write on the wall to be a true fan. And it's not just kids. I know of an older gentleman who wrote on the wall and then bragged about it on a message board. These people are just stupid.
I hope this never happens in a theatre again.
That being said, I guess I can understand why the producers kept it. They knew the show was going to close soon anyway. I just wish it could've kept it's dignity.

The "Broadway Dies 6/1/08" is so ridiculous. I mean I'm a huge RENT fan, but I realize that there are so many great shows out there that aren't closing. Broadway isn't dying by any means. These people who are writing stuff about Heath Ledger and now this about need to close the lid on their sharpies and step away from the wall.

It changed many people lives, i for one watched it with the OBC when i went to visit my aunt in the states.I was going through the uncomfortable moment where i thought i was gay but couldn't tell anyone (bit personal now) but had also tried suicide, on top of that a girl i knew had just died of Aids. The moment i started watching Rent i felt like it was talking to me, its message of No Day But Today haunted me for a long time after. After the show i felt "well if they are talking about all this in a Broadway musical it cant be that Taboo what im going through", it gave me sense of community and hope.

Well considering that's what the people who got banned did, I'm going to say no. Also, it's all sharpie, so windex isn't exactly going to cover it.
It will take an hour to paint over, its no big deal, think of the job offer for the young person who gets to paint over it....see the people doing the graffiti are giving people jobs.....they should be applauded lol
It is a big deal. It's vandalism and they have written over artwork on the wall. Also, it's going to go through the union when it finally gets painted and I'm sure that those people will really love having to paint over some rambling diatribes about why Anthony looks fiesty in his corduroys.

But that's all to be expected. If Jonathon Lawson hadn't died the day of the dress rehearsal, this show would have been a footnote in history.
This show was embraced by a generation of kids with limited world view and even more limited grasp of literature and theater (okay, perhaps you're not one of them) but seriously, this show is - to me - the Golden Globes of theater.
Oh, and in fact, even the lead song is bull. There 529,944 minutes in a year, not 529,600.
UPDATE: I forgot to mention the word "pretentious" anywhere in the above. Don't know how I managed to forget that.
