But then how are people able to get away with writing stuff on the building right in front of people who work there? It's not like there are no witnesses, they do this right in front of massive crowds and Nederlander staff. Someone among the powers the be must think it's like, free advertising or something. All that psychotic crap written up there just serves as a testament to how great the show is and how much people love it, or something.

I said that in 2 of my messages. It's rumored that the producers like it.

Also, they were being told to not write on the wall in the beginning, but since most of the people writing were like...15 years old, the people who worked there didn't really want to threaten kids with legal action, especially by the time it got to the point where it became almost a joke. Also, as I said, much (not all) was written during Adam and Anthony's return. I saw at least 10 people after every show writing on the walls. It became too big to stop.

That's really weird. I remember reading posts on the RENT Livejournal community about the cleaning adventure this past summer, and the girl organizing it made a point of saying that she had checked with the theater, with the police, and with everyone else she could possibly think of to make sure what she was planning was legal and they wouldn't get in trouble. She even posted pictures the next day of people cleaning and said it went really well.

This is the first time I'm hearing that all those people were banned from lotto.

I want to know who left the memorial 'dump' in the men's bathroom.

"Memorial dump?"
Wow... Reading some of those messages on the front, as opposed to the real wall, is kinda sad. I mean, "RIP Heath Ledger?" It seems like people are SEARCHING for stuff to write, like they NEED to do it to be a real fan! I think the real wall only certain people can sign is great, a tradition, but 10 thousand "RENT PWNZ!" is just graffiti. WHY in the WORLD the theatre would allow it... it just turns people off, as the minority of over-extreme fanatics always tend to do...

Maybe it leads some to recall dingier times in that era Rent tries to portray. However, it's a show, not a way of life and graffiti is not needed all over the walls of a landmarked theater- disgusting!

I am so happy and thankful that they're going to renovate the RENT theater. I find it incredibly disrespectful to write on the walls. If you call yourself a lover of theater, have some courtesy and leave the damn walls alone! I understand that the show has changed many lives......so write the cast a letter, don't leave it for them to read all over the theater walls. I wonder what's going into the Nederlander now?

They should renovate the whole theatre. I thought the inside was a dump as much as the outside was. As for the RENT WALL they should take that out and auction it off or put it somewhere because that is a part of RENT history IMO.

The RENT wall is in the back and the stuff in the pictures is more toward the front I think. I have signes the actual RENT wall (someone wrote over me tho)
the RENT wall is important cuz so many cast members and crew AND people who have been effected by the show have left messages on how the show has changed them. So why in the world so many people are up in arms about THAT wall is beyond me...but the newer wall..is crap..remove it lol

And everyone saying the Nederlander theater is sorta fit for RENT. RENT is about poverty and struggling, and the theater looks very "Bohemiane" (sp?) Wasnt that done on purpose by the creators of the show? I might be wrong tho

Here's a question:

If they allow folks to mark the walls up, would they allow someone in with a cleaning rag and some Windex?

It's rumored that the producers like it.

Right, I get that. It was more of a rhetorical, "why on earth would that be the logic?" question. If they're allowing one thing that is clearly a form of vandalism, why are they punishing people for another thing that is technically also vandalism? If the answer is truly that the producers like it, well... no comment.

I took a trip to the Nederlander today, and saw firsthad the horrendous defacement of the building. It's really everywhere! Someone wrote "Broadway Dies 6/1/08" over the frame of one of the doors, so this is still an ongoing thing, which is really sad.

Why does that, above all else, shock you? And being that it IS defacement, yeah, that actually is an appropriate word for it.

That is repulsive.

If jaystarr meant it's sad that these kids think one show closing means Broadway is completely dead, then I agree.

My favorites (pre illegal clean-up) were "I like to write on walls" and "I'd have Anthony Rapp's babies for free."

I think it's awful that people really believe you have to write on the wall to be a true fan. And it's not just kids. I know of an older gentleman who wrote on the wall and then bragged about it on a message board. These people are just stupid.

I hope this never happens in a theatre again.

That being said, I guess I can understand why the producers kept it. They knew the show was going to close soon anyway. I just wish it could've kept it's dignity.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain how this drek "changed their life." All it did for me was make me realize I had lost three hours forever.

OH WOW!!!!!!

The "Broadway Dies 6/1/08" is so ridiculous. I mean I'm a huge RENT fan, but I realize that there are so many great shows out there that aren't closing. Broadway isn't dying by any means. These people who are writing stuff about Heath Ledger and now this about need to close the lid on their sharpies and step away from the wall.

"I'm still waiting for someone to explain how this drek "changed their life." All it did for me was make me realize I had lost three hours forever"

It changed many people lives, i for one watched it with the OBC when i went to visit my aunt in the states.I was going through the uncomfortable moment where i thought i was gay but couldn't tell anyone (bit personal now) but had also tried suicide, on top of that a girl i knew had just died of Aids. The moment i started watching Rent i felt like it was talking to me, its message of No Day But Today haunted me for a long time after. After the show i felt "well if they are talking about all this in a Broadway musical it cant be that Taboo what im going through", it gave me sense of community and hope.

Well considering that's what the people who got banned did, I'm going to say no. Also, it's all sharpie, so windex isn't exactly going to cover it.

It is a big deal. It's vandalism and they have written over artwork on the wall. Also, it's going to go through the union when it finally gets painted and I'm sure that those people will really love having to paint over some rambling diatribes about why Anthony looks fiesty in his corduroys.

sorry songanddanceman2, if this show spoke to you, it just muttered things that far more articulate voices have been saying for a couple of decades. I have always felt the show was trite crap dressed up to look avant garde. Showing the world through the eyes of the young and poor? Now there's a new one. Star-crossed lovers where one is dying of AIDS? Made for TV movies covered that a decade earlier. Adapting La Boheme? Not even close to a new idea. Rock opera? Been there many, many times before.

But that's all to be expected. If Jonathon Lawson hadn't died the day of the dress rehearsal, this show would have been a footnote in history.

This show was embraced by a generation of kids with limited world view and even more limited grasp of literature and theater (okay, perhaps you're not one of them) but seriously, this show is - to me - the Golden Globes of theater.

Oh, and in fact, even the lead song is bull. There 529,944 minutes in a year, not 529,600.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention the word "pretentious" anywhere in the above. Don't know how I managed to forget that.

Well if the "Rent Wall" started off as a beautiful thing, what I'm able to see in the pictures makes it look not much better than the front of the theater. "Da Butz Rules?"...I like the guy but seriously, that would fit right in with the stuff on the outside. And there seems to be a good deal of that graffiti on the much more well respected Rent Wall than just that.
