""Da Butz Rules?"...I like the guy but seriously, that would fit right in with the stuff on the outside."

Yes, but what makes it awesome is that Norbert Leo Butz or one of his close friends probably wrote that. Not some fifteen year old Rent head with a sharpie.

"If they allow folks to mark the walls up, would they allow someone in with a cleaning rag and some Windex?"

I think the point is that they are not paying a group of workers under a union contract to write graffiti on walls. So when the kids do it, they're not putting a union worker out of business. They WILL pay workers, under union contracts, to CLEAN the theatre when this nonsense is over. The theatre is only able to operate because of agreements they've signed with the unions. They aren't going to risk those agreements by allowing non-union people to do for free what the union people can get paid for. (That was a TERRIBLY worded, long-winded sentence but I hope I got the point across.)

bumping this old thread because I walked by the Nederlander today for the first time in *forever*, and was surprised that there is no longer any of that lameass graffiti on the walls outside! There are still spots of graffiti on the silver areas around the doors that I guess could not be repainted, but the walls are plain...whatever that color is- green? yellow?...again, I was surprised to see it.

Wow,

last time I passed by it (last week) it was still there. I noticed that it started to cover the doors that have the photo of the OBC on it as well.

I am glad that it is gone. It just saddens me that there are so many people that were willing to do this.

I do agree that the real rent wall the one back stage should be auctioned off for charity. That is one that is important and has some significance.

And, I disagree with the statements that Rent wouldn't have been anything if it wasn't for the death of Larson. I have trouble believing that EVERY newspaper that reviewed it gave it a great review and said all the great things about the show just based on the death of Larson and not for the work itself.

Wow! I walked past the theatre last Wednesday morning and it was covered in graffiti. I even took pictures because it was so awful.

I'm the kind of person who believes grafitti to be art, I think it can be very, very beautiful. But that just looks, for lack of a better word, lame.

I was SO happy to see that they also scrubbed of as much of the sharpie that was on the pictures of the OBC on the doors as they could. Can the theater stay clean now?

I don't remember any when I saw it in April 2007. Shameful.

The producers don't like it. The cast doesn't like it. The front of house staff doesn't like it. The recent paint-over was done with grafitti proof paint, but these stupid children will find a way past it. Really sad, kids.

If the producers didn't like it, why didn't they instruct house staff to stop people from writing? Why did they ban people from the lotto that tried to clean it? Why did they leave it up for two and a half years without doing anything about it?

I was at the Nederlander on Saturday and was appalled by how bad the graffiti had gotten since I was there in October...I was taking pictures of the OBC and could barely see them because of all the markings on there faces...I thought it was very disrespectful to the theater!

I'm glad they painted over all the graffiti. Hopefully the theater won't get all covered up again between now and Sept. 1st.

I would be sad about a new show coming over and painting over if the grafitti was always there and was started by the original Rentheads in the 90's, however this wasn't there a couple of years ago and I don't think that it's tasteful or respectful to the theater.

NOt only that, but they wrote on the faces of Idina, Taye, Adam, Jesse, Wilson, and poor Anthony.... it really is sad to see the pictures ruined.

Not to mention that those doors are auctioned off for BC/EFA every year and are practically unsaleable when marked all up. So not only are you defacing a theatre but taking money away from a worthy organization. Lame.

I saw Passing Strange tonight, remembered this thread and stopped by Nederlander on the way to the subway home.

The image appears to not be working... but it was gone

IT'S GONE?

But it was there on 4/6 when I saw the show. When was it painted?

I'm kinda shocked. What did they do with the picture of the OBC-that was completley covered in grafitti too!
