The Little Mermaid Farewell Thread#1

Hate it or love it, the show is closing. I personally enjoyed the show even though some costumes and sets are horrendous; I blame the director for that. There are still many elements of the show that i love and it did gave Sierra Boggess a career boost to move on to bigger projects. I thought the cast did the best they could with what they were given and I just wish the show had better direction. Good to see it going out with a bang and hopefully it'll get revived with better direction in the future and may it have a successful tour on the road.
Anyone else going to the the closing performance?

You mean the costumes, not the costumers. Unless you're saying that the people who go see the show are ugly

Posted: 8/29/09 at 3:30pmIt was far from perfect but I enjoyed the show and saw it twice. I'll miss it, I don't think it was nearly as bad as people made it out to be.

Don't let the door hit you on the fin as you wheel out.
Couldn't have said it better myself. One of the ugliest, misdirected shows I've seen in recent memory. Sherie Rene Scott and Sierra Boggess were the only saving graces, along with (most of)the score.

I'm really gonna miss this show. It was so cheesy, and the staging just wasn't that good, but that original Broadway cast was fabulous, and I loved the added songs. I don't know, I had so much fun at The Little Mermaid (I saw it near the beginning of the run)-- all of the cast members were so enthusiastic and so was the audience.
But I can't wait to see what Norm Lewis does next! And Sean Palmer-- he has a beautiful voice.

TheatreFan,
re: The Little Mermaid Farewell Thread#11
Posted: 8/29/09 at 4:17pmI saw this show from the front row and hated it. Some of the costumes were so bad, and I did not like the changes to the plot; however, I should have made a second trip back and given it another change, as I think part of the problem might have been being to close to enjoy. The score and cast somewhat made up for the problems this show had. Little Mermaid was always one of my favorite Disney movies. It is a shame that this show had so many flaws. Best wishes to the talented cast.

Posted: 8/29/09 at 4:22pm^ Quite the opposite for me. I was in the last row of the balcony, and I absolutely loved it! I loved all the new songs (especially She's In Love and If Only) and the original cast! I didn't think the "heeleys" were going to work out, but to my surprise I though it worked really well. The only thing I didn't really like was the whole contest concept, I like what they did in the movie better. Updated On: 8/29/09 at 04:22 PM

I wish the production hadn't been so misguided. The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie, and, in my opinion, has one of Alan Menken's best scores. One of the only things I truly enjoyed about the show was hearing an orchestra play 'Part of Your World' live.
I'm also a huge Disney geek, and it pains me when things they put out just don't work.
Also, who the heck at Disney Theatrics decides what shows they're going to do? Tarzan? Really? And I love Little Mermaid, but I watch the movie, and it does not say 'Broadway' to me. Beauty and the Beast does, Aladdin does, Hunchback of Notre Dame does. I don't know, it feels like Mermaid is missing something.
Back to the production problems: I don't mind the costumes... For the humans. I know it's hard to make 'mermaids' work onstage, but seriously, they could have at least put those fins at a less awkward angle, so it didn't look like they had legs and a fin coming out of their rears. And the sets. Good lord. In some spots, the stage is nearly empty, then in the rest, it all almost looks like it's made of oversized Barbie playsets.
Like I said, Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie, and I wish it had made the transition to Broadway a little better.

Posted: 8/29/09 at 5:43pm^ i completely agreed with the staging where some songs the stage is almost completely empty with the cheesy backdrop, especially during "One Step Closer" and the staging for "If Only" could've been more creative other than just placing the actors in 4 different spots on the stage while Sierra sits on that bed that looks like it's made out of rock. I liked what they did with "Poor Unfortunate Soul" and "Kiss the Girl", but everything else, the direction could've been better. Still sad to see it go. It's my fav Disney film as well.

I waited for Mermaid to come to Broadway literally my whole life. Sure, the costumes could've been better, but I had a great time when I saw it.

I wasn't able to get tickets for closing but managed to get tickets for today mat thanks to some of the folks on here
But as a movie I grew up with and special part of my childhood having this show coming to broadway was a great joy
I loved the new score and there were many moments that made me smile and take me back to the story and songs that I love
After going back a bunch of times this show still made me smile
Although it could have been much much better it was still enjoyable to see
So goodbye to little mermaid and I hope to see you back afloat in the future
Ps and just an FYI, there was barely any merchandise left today
And Pss... Drew Seeley is horrible

re: The Little Mermaid Farewell Thread#23
Posted: 8/29/09 at 8:59pmI saw the show in July. After reading all of the bashing comments, I was expecting to see a horrible production. However, I thought it was a great family show. I wasn't a fan of the heelies or the costumes, but the score and the performances were fantastic. Overall, I really liked it. I'm glad it is going out with a bang.

Posted: 8/29/09 at 9:22pmI'm just glad it's going. And yes, it's horrible for the soon to be unemployed....but that's not what this thread is about. It bothers me when substandard material STAYS on B'way.
