-- "I'd love to see IN THE HEIGHTS win for it's lighting or sets although I think both will probably go to SOUTH PACIFIC."
Unless the voters are not aware that the animation and projections in "Sunday in the Park with George" are considered as part of the Set Design, that award should be going to "Sunday."
I thought Esparza was just "okay" in The Homecoming; Jim Norton was my favorite performance out of that group.
I think Jenna Russell deserves some sort of award.
What, was the Olivier not good enough?
Paulo Szot absolutely acts and sings the heck out of the role. I was worried that as an opera singer his acting would be stiff and wooden, but he absolutely blew me away. If anyone besides Szot should win, it should be Daniel Evans. Miranda is charming, but definitely not the best performance. I think Best Score will be a just compensation for his work.
I'm pretty sure the Tony voters will all get the memo that the Sunday projections fall under Set Design. I'd say that is likely to be Sunday's only win.
As brilliant as Boyd Gaines is, I would really rather see the award go to Christopher Fitzgerald for his exuberant, star-making performance. He's working his butt off and having a great time up there and it shows. He is by far the best part of that leaden behemoth at The Hilton.

Yo Yo Yo I won 99000 dollars.... oh please!!!
I wish it was easier to get a ticket to South Pacific. I do not enjoy the show but the music is lovely, which is the main reason I want to see it. I saw a production in Stratford, ON and loved the music, but not the book, and don't get me started on the terrible film version that put me to sleep in the first 10 minutes.
Szot's acting in South Pacific is wonderful, and his "This Nearly Was Mine" is practically a showstopper.
He's my choice for the Tony.

Um this poll is interesting but by no means a real signal. I am sorry but it would just be horrible if ITH won best book. There are awards it deserves but I mean come on. It was what kept the show from being great. No one, not even the people who love the show, think the book was good. So I feel this poll is of questionable quality.

BINGO~!!! and South Pacific will win an acting award of some kind. Paolo Szot is beyond brilliant. The last time I saw the show the audience couldn't stop clapping (I counted about 4 minutes of applause) after "This Nearly Was Mine". He really is terrific. On the same note, I wish Kelli could be this year's David Hyde Pierce win (the surprise-he didn't win any pre-Tony awards and got the Tony). But I don't think it'll happen. (I think Danny Burstein may win-he was excellent.)
As for book, I think Beane will get it. The book of In the Heights is the weakest part by far. Xanadu will get something and I think best book is its best shot. (Although I wish the Tony voters could see things my way and let it slip through as best musical.)

Xanadu will always be the best musical of 2007-2008 for me, no matter how the Tony goes. And ITH and PS rooters, don't forget the "little train that could" syndrome. I'm not saying WILL; I'm saying COULD. Look at what happened to Dewey in 1948.
As enthusiastic as ITH fans are it is a tired hackneyed show. Passing Strange is by far the more original creative and interesting of the two shows. Just look at the critical response and the fact that PS won Drama Desk and Drama Critics awards. It would be horrifying if ITH won the Tony for best musical and ESPECIALLY for best book because the book is a corny soap opera-ish piece of bad writing.
Whatever award Bernadette Peters presents is usually the upset...or it seems to be that way recently.

In The Heights could not be nominated they were last year (Drama Desk)
<< They're picking Miranda over Paulo Szot? Interesting. >>
This week, NY1 "On Stage" had their "roundtable debate"-
Out of the four "critics/experts", three chose Miranda, with the other stating that it would be either Szot or Miranda, but specified that if "ITH" won for Best Score, Miranda would win as well.
See I thought the opposite-they wouldn't give him both Tonys.
He'd get one or the other-and I tend to think it'll be score. South Pacific will get at least one acting nod and Paolo seems to be their best shot.
Ok, this is getting way off track now. XANADU has a 34% chance of winning Best Musical with IN THE HEIGHTS not too far ahead with 43%? C'mon...if ITH doesn't win (which, at this point, is highly unlikely), PASSING STRANGE will...but I think pretty much everyone agrees XANADU doesn't have much of a chance...
Okay...I just realized why...on Cubby Burnstein's site, there's a link for the poll saying to vote for XANADU. Look at Best Choreography....28% for XANADU and 24% for CRY-BABY? I'm 99% sure this poll said to "vote for who you think will win" and XANADU will NOT win Choreography...this isn't an audience award poll, it's Tony Award predictions. Let's get real here...
I just want one upset this year. I always like when something crazy happens and the award goes to someone else whom nobody predicted would get it. That's what makes the award shows interesting, otherwise if we predict every single award what is the point of watching the show. That's why award shows are so dull.
Major Upset 1: Someone else winning over Patti LuPone
Major Upset 2: Xanadu winning Best Musical
Major Upset 3: Sunday in the Park with George winning Best Revival
Would love to see one of those three happen. It will make for a fun reading on the boards the next day!
Xanadu
(sing with me)
Xanadu ooh ooh
Nobody
Thinks it can win
But I do
The fighting over PASSING STRANGE and IN THR HEIGHTS
makes the DU look better and better....
I see an upset happening in best featured actor in a musical. I think it might go to Daniel Breaker.
Okay, I'm going to comment on bschenid's post:
Major Upset 1: Someone else winning over Patti LuPone
Major Upset 2: Xanadu winning Best Musical
Major Upset 3: Sunday in the Park with George winning Best Revival
As for those upsets, I'd love to see no. 1 and 2 happen. (Kelli deserves it for a beautiful, nuanced performance.) and I loved Xanadu. No. 3 I don't think is quite as likely. South Pacific received the most acclaim of any show this season and is a worthy Tony winner for best revival. Any other year Sunday would have it. But South Pacific really is brilliant.
But, overall, I hope 2 of the 3 upsets happen.
I would LOVE to see Daniel Breaker win. He was a real key to the show's success.
Personally, I don't consider Breaker winning to be an upset really. It's a wide open category and while Danny Burstein and Boyd Gaines are the frontrunners, it's anyone's Tony pretty much. (Chris Fitzgerald has a shot too.) So, Breaker winning isn't really much of an upset.
I agree bwaygal. In the Supporting Actor Category there isn't a lock at all. Some say Boyd some say Danny, it isn't like the Best Actress Category where everyone seems to scream Patti (though I am rooting for Jenna). I don't think Daniel Breaker will take it, because there is so much Hype between Boyd and Danny and even Christopher. But who knows. It will definitely be an interesting Tonys year.

Just some thoughts re: Patti. First, I think she deserves the Best Actress in a Musical by a LLLOOOONNNNGGGG shot. Her performance is brilliant, her singing's (best since Merman's) a knockout and her grasp on the audience is something for the books. No one else in the running had the impact on the audience that she did.
Having said all of that, at least two other times Patti was considered the unquestioned winner (Anything Goes and Sweeney Todd) prior to the ceremony. That leads me to believe that there's some kind of anti-Patti feeling with a block of voters -- why, I haven't the vaguest idea -- that may come into play once again. Mind you, this is NOT what I want to happen. She's giving the performance of a lifetime in the role of a lifetime, but . . . .
Here is another thought:
It is a freaking poll where ANYONE can vote. Anyone named RaulEsparzaFan, PattiFanatic, or ihateintheheights can vote as many times as they like. So I would not give too much credibility to this just because it is on the NYT website.
