I think the only way to see a truly first rate revival of Porgy and Bess -- which is certainly long overdue -- is at an opera house. On Broadway, you can only have 28 musicians and MAYBE a cast of 50 (though few shows these days have more than 35-40). Whenever the Met, for instance brings it back, there's an 80 piece orchestra and a cast of 100+. THAT's how I want to see PORGY, rather than some tiny anemic Broadway revival.
I saw the last Broadway revival of the show back in 1983. Though it played at Radio City, it was deemed eligible for Broadway and the Tonys and it was genuinely epic with an enormous cast, orchestra, sets etc.... That's how the show should ideally be produced.

West Side Story.
I think a Sweet Charity revival in the future with the original book would be awful. The original book was bad, especially the ridiculous ending. I much prefer Neil Simon's revised book. But I'm all for recreating Bob Fosse's staging and choreography.

Minus the good fairy ending, the original book was pretty good. I have the script/book Random House released in the 60's, and it really isn't that bad.
There are some jokes that no one will get today. But I think Simon tried to modernize a little too much. The new ending was pretty good, because it gives the audience comfort that Charity will be okay.
But Simon took out the big rescue scene, and plenty of other things from the original book. I do love that they changed the parachute jump to the feris wheel.

I would really love to see the London production of Sunday in the Park with George transfer to NYC.
A Parade revival needs to happen within the next five years or so.

Posted: 4/23/06 at 7:30pmThe Seacret Garden - a show that I always thought was underrated but is beautifil. The show either need to be huge and epic, or very small and intimate. Nothing inbetween works, thats the problem with community theater productions of the show, they don't have the budget to produce it on an epic scale and I have yet to see a production that has the imagination to make a simple vision work.

"Hello, Dolly!" is LONG overdue, as is "Bye, Bye, Birdie"
I'd love to see "Sunday in the Park With George" revived too, it's one of my favorites. "No, No, Nanette" is due for a revival too, or at least something at Encores!.

Kiss of the Spider Woman
Barnum (this can probably wait)
Once Upon a Mattress (with a proper star)

The same answer I give every time this question is asked:
Pippin
I know there has been talks recently about a revival, I just hope things come to fruition.
And I still haven't accepted that Ragtime closed. I know it's too soon for a revival, but a girl can dream.
