"Fran and Barry Weissler, who produced "Chicago," have quietly put $400,000 into the show at the Vineyard. If the reviews are strong, they'll move it to a small Broadway house, very possibly before this year's Tony cutoff date, should a theater become available."

If it transfers, it could certainly shake up some things this award season.

Posted: 2/26/10 at 5:18amOnly problem is where. Every available theatre will shortly be occupied, so they'll need for something running to close unexpectedly and quickly. The Belasco would have come in handy right about now.

Posted: 2/26/10 at 7:40amSo what could possibly close? The only thing I could think of is Race really or God of Carnage if the new cast doesn't give it much of a boost, and MAYBE one of the new shows (Next Fall, Looped, All About Me) if it fails miserably.

A show might be dancing to the Cell Block Tango soon. What?!
(Just wishful thinking.)

All About Me is a limited run. If they were looking for a theatre, couldn't they wait for that to close?
However, now that I think about it, I don't know if there would be enough time between All About Me closing/loading out for The Scottsboro Boys to come in and open with enough time to be considered for the Tonys.

Well, first off, Scottsboro has no scenery and very little (but effective) special lighting. So, I can't imagine load-in being more than a few weeks max.
The bigger issue is that John Cullum - the only "big name" in the production - is supposed to do that Stroman/Prince/Patinkin thing @ the Menier. Isn't that soon? Wouldn't that mean either dropping out of that show or finding a replacement for Scottsboro... Frankly, I can't imagine anyone filling the interlocutor role better. John balances light and dark really well. Maybe George Hearn or Joel Grey - but George tends to be a little more serious and Grey's physicality is slight and would just drown next to the big strapping boys...

I haven't seen the show yet, but I'm a little surprised to learn that the interlocutor is white...
In the minstrels days, he was the lead of the minstrel troupe. The most "eloquent" of the slaves.

what about it taking the neil simon theater
#9The Scottsboro Boys' COULD transfer to Broadway before the Tony cutoff...
Posted: 2/26/10 at 12:45pmI highly doubt the Weisslers would put it in a theatre that already has other plans. They think with the long term in mind. This means no Neil Simon (Love Never Dies) and probably no Henry Miller (Roundabout is in charge of the programming) or Helen Hayes (Second Stage takes it over soon).

Posted: 2/26/10 at 1:08pmDon't worry about the color of the interlocutor, it makes perfect sense as the show develops - and it's DEFINITELY a strong commentary. And there are TONS of real minstrel show conventions that are cleverly woven into the production. I was fascinated after and did a bit of reading about the shows and their roots and I was shocked to learn about all the little things that were consistent with tradition - and those things were all used to give incredible subtext. Flawlessly. :)

Posted: 2/26/10 at 3:08pmI can't wait to see this tomorrow, but if this transfers next season, it certainly seems as if it will give Hal Prince a run for his money if his show opens next season. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Weisslers pull it off this season. The Best Musical and Best Score categories seem really weak this year, and it'd be nice to see K&E win a third, or is it fourth, Tony.

I agree with this completely. I believe MEMPHIS and THE ADDAMS FAMILY are the only musicals this season with original scores, so it would be nice for this one to sneak in there.

SB would be a shoo-in for score, maybe musical. I definitely think direction & choreography are strong contenders (director practically a given). John could score a nom, but the boys are pretty evenly split (there's one performance that kinda sticks out - but not enough to be supporting I think).
Of course, the big question is how much has Addams changed and if that has helped the show improve greatly... Memphis better not win a darn thing - I'd prefer no nominations either, save one for Montego (which will probably go to CZJ anyway, right?) but that's it. I'd rather see categories shortened than filled with unworthy nominations.

Would conventional wisdom say to go ahead and book seats now for this run (as it appears to be selling quickly)? Is there a chance of it extending into early April at the Vineyard?
I consider myself so lucky to have seen the brilliant production of The Visit in VA, that I don't want to miss another chance to see a new K&E show that might fall by the wayside.
(I think I am just looking for justification, rationale, and support to buy tickets, so help me out! It doesn't help that today was payday and who doesn't love a good splurge?!)

Seeing this tonight! soo excited! for those who are interested the rush was really easy (im sure the weather had lots to do with it.) 20 dollars, general rush two hours before the show. cash only though i had to run out and get cash and was still able to get a ticket. there were two other people there who showed up for rush tickets.
