Kander and Ebb are one of the major artistic inspirations for the show I'm writing. This show was like a shot in the arm when my inspiration was flagging.

Listen I get the influence of Kander & Ebb on musical theater, but this post is regarding the "accomplishment" of being #1 on a menial chart that truly means nothing. The album only sold a few thousand copies. This post is also severly mistitled Number 1 on the CAST RECORDING chart which only has 3 entries. I hate to be negative here, but this "#1" truly means nothing.
If it were #1 on the REAL billboard list it would've sold like >200k, which is ridiclous cause only like a quarter of the that number of people actually saw the show.
I usually try not to be to vitriolic on here, but this post really rubbed me the wrong way.

Lol, there's more than 3 entries on the chart. You need to subscribe to see the full chart.

Well however many entries it has, let not pretend that this is an actual accomplishment, nor will it help the show be remembered.

What exactly is offending you so much? Are you a competitor of Kander & Ebb's? This is actually, yes, technically an accomplishment, however trivial it may be to you. Get your head out of your ass and don’t be so rude.

I really don't understand how this could piss anyone off. Nobody is making it bigger than it is.

Gypsy,
It is indeed an accomplishment but it is healthy to put accomplishments in context. It is no secret that few if any cast recordings make a blip on the music radar screen. (Which explains why few are on major labels.) It is also no secret that in all of the weekly rankings, whether for music, books, movies or whatever, new entries will often make an anomalous appearance in their debut week. (Because the highly specialized constituency for the new release is chomping at the bit for the release and run out (or online) to buy it on day one.) So yes, it is better that a recording had its day in the sun rather than debuting in oblivion, but it is important to some people to understand the context of the "moment." I don't think it is rude. I don't think anyone has disparaged your enjoyment of the recording, and I don't think your enjoyment should be measured by how long the recording has noticeable sales. Americans have this (unhealthy, I think) need to rank everything. I would respectfully suggest that your enjoyment need not be interrupted by the need to lash out at someone who points out the meaning of the ranking.

Hogan, you're correct, I suppose I lashed out a bit; I just found mattporter's insistent reminders that this means nothing to be degrading. Let's just enjoy the fabulous recording.

I just don't get the vitriol. I mean it's not like The Visit was expected to sell enough copies to make it to the top spot, so to me, it was a nice surprise and something worth noting no matter how little it actually sold in raw numbers compared to albums on other charts. Yes, look at it in context, which means compare it to other musical theatre albums, not what's selling on the Top 100 Pop Charts. So yes, making it number one on any chart is an actual accomplishment, or should we diminish all people's accomplishments if they don't reach pop culture/mainstream levels of success? That means most every day people in their fields of work have no reason to celebrate anything then.
And Hogan, with all due respect, I have a feeling that if someone made this sort of remark about Hamilton, you'd give us an essay about why that person was wrong. Not to say you wouldn't have a point, but I think responding to someone who felt some weird need to take offense to this thread doesn't warrant a condescending lecture.

scotty, I didn't think there was any condescension in what I wrote, and I don't think Gypsy read it that way. Re Hamilton, if you look at other threads you will see that within the last day I said that calling it a game changer etc is unwarranted. Why? For the very same reason I gave here: context. And while I expect Hamilton OBCR to open impressively, even with major label backing, I have no illusions that it is going to make a dent in the Billboard 200. (Nor do I think it should.)

Does anyone know why The Visit isn't included as a part of Apple's new streaming service, Apple Music? I am open to continuing my membership beyond the trial period, but the, Original Cast (they call Soundtracks) offering is week. What's up?

Apologies if this was posted elsewhere at some point, but I just stumbled across Angela Lansbury singing Love and Love Alone as a result of Lin-Manuel Tweeting out that he included Chita singing it on a list of his hip hop recommendations for US Weekly. Love her take on the song.

Would like to know how many copies of cast recordings are sold each week. If BOM and Wicked are perpetually in the top two slots I've got to believe it's not that high a sale rate. Easy to see how each new release tops the charts in its first week. If anyone has the rest of the list please share - would like to see where Hamilton slipped to.

The Hamilton debut two weeks ago in perspective
http://m.billboard.com/entry/view/id/142767
you would think such a strong debut would remain at the top of the charts for a few weeks.

I ran into this thread while looking for The Visit reviews and this jumped out to me. I really wanna go lol @ Hogan since Hamilton OBCR has been on Billboard 200 for over 80 weeks now. Current position - 18. Peak position - 3.

Yes and despite being released in 2015, the Hamilton cast recording was the 5th best selling album of 2016 and is currently the 12th best selling album of 2017.

I never thought that an OBC would ever chart like that in my lifetime. That is really, really impressive
This thread has inspired me to give another listen to my Visit CD. Also not on Tidal ![]()

I have been listening to The Visit as well. John Riddle sounds so good, the memory of how hot (*blush*) he was in the show came back to me. Looking forward to his Prince Hans.
I hope this show gets revived a few years from now.
