I'm putting together a scavenger hunt in Times Square for some students with a theatre focus.
What are some good, insider theatre places I could include? Any hidden gems to look out for?

- Sardis (have them take a photo of a specific portrait)
- Lincoln Center Library (have them write down the name of the show featured in the Al Hirschfeld drawing at his table in the lobby)
- Duffy Square/TKTS (have them pick up a discount flyer for 3 different shows from the people who flyer in costumes)
- have them take a photo of the marquee of all 40 Broadway theaters
- have them go to the BC/EFA offices and make a $5 donation
- have them buy a cookie at Schmackerys (famous cookie shoppe in the theater community and growing more famous in the city)
- have them go to the Drama Book Shop and take a photo with the script of a play they recently did at school

More theatre renaming:
Neil Simon - Alvin
Walter Kerr - Ritz
Richard Rodgers - 46th Street
St. James - Erlanger's Theatre
Samuel J. Friedman - Biltmore
Gershwin - Uris
Lunt-Fontanne - Globe
John Golden - Theatre Masque
Gerald Schoenfeld - Plymouth
Eugene O'Neil - Forrest, Coronet
Brooks Atkinson - Mansfield
Bernard B. Jacobs - Royale
Belasco - Stuyvesant
American Airlines - Selwyn
Also you could say that the Mark Hellinger was renamed the Times Square Church even though technically it changed usage.

Absolutely MrJohnston. I was trying to think of which Theatres currently have the previous name still on the exterior either etched in stone or signage like the Martin Beck

Not as good as some of the great stuff that has already been mentioned but perhaps making a little list of questions related to current shows and they need to then go take pictures at the theatres of the correct answers?
Example "What show won the 2011 Tony for Best New Musical?" They would have to go take a picture at the Book of Mormon over at the Eugene O'Neill. Put in some easy ones like award wins as well as toss in some things that might not be AS well know and might require a bit more thinking. "This musical revival production marks the shows 3rd run on Broadway." Answer, Les Miserables.

I think it would be awesome to do questions about the theatre architecture, like which Broadway theatre was modeled after Versailles's Petit Trianon? Answer: The Cort
Or you could do historical questions like: Which theatre was built for Leonard Bernstein to house his musical revues? Answer: The Music Box

Have them find 5 buildings that are still standing that used to be Broadway Theatres
-Hudson Theatre
-Times Square Theatre
-Edison Ballroom
-Times Square Church
-Liberty Theatre (They actually can go inside the theatre and get a picture. It is now The Liberty Diner)

"Or you could do historical questions like: Which theatre was built for Leonard Bernstein to house his musical revues? Answer: The Music Box"
The correct answer to that question would be blank, since the Music Box was built by and for Irving Berlin (designed by C. Howard Crane).

Have them collect as many playbills from theaters as they can....sometimes if you ask the BO people or a guard, or a doorman, they will give you one in the afternoon.
Take a picture with someone who is currently in a Broadway show.
A picture in front of a theater that is now a Church. (The Hellinger)
A famous restaurant that has posters of flop shows on it's walls. (Joe Allen's).
A piturte in front of a theater that was combined from 2 old theaters (The Lyric)
A piture of a theater that is also used as a synagogue (The Actor's Temple).
A piture of a therater that used to be a discotheque (Studio 54)
A pictue of George M Cohan (Duffy Sq.)
A used ticket stub.
A copy of Backstage.
A picture in fron of a theater that is inhabited by the ghost of the man named for it. (Belasco)
Have fun- great idea.

If your facing the Lunt its on the right side between the theatre and the American eagle. It's back a bit because the American eagle wasn't there when Lttle Mermaid was playing.
