Yes, aside from the fact that The Sound of Music is infinitely more popular as a musical than Peter Pan (because of the movie), it had never been on television before. Peter Pan (the musical) has been staged on TV and is readily available on DVD right now. The curiosity factor won't be there.
For that reason alone, Oliver! or Grease would have been a more interesting choice.
And if they do the R&H Cinderella the next year, they'll have the same thing --- something that's already been done on TV multiple times.
What was good about The Sound of Music on TV (and live) was that it hadn't been done before. They pretty much lost their nerve with this choice. What's the risk? (other than making sure the actors aren't hurt while flying)
