Does anyone remember the 1976 Hallmark Hall of Fame musical adaptation of PETER PAN? It starred Mia Farrow as Peter, Danny Kaye as Captain Hook and Paula Kelly as Tiger Lily.
Music and Lyrics by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. Choreography by Michael Kidd.

I remember that. I kinda liked it except that at no point did I think of her as a real boy. Now she looks like a lesbian who just finished a round of golf.

I think the problem with this year's broadcast, is going to be that this show was done
a lot of times before for television, and definitely we will see a dramatic decrease in the number of viewers. Even if a number of teens, pre-teens will be interested, watching Peter Pan will not interest some adults like the sound of music did.
Personally, I was hoping for a similar title. Maybe The Wizard of OZ, White Christmas.
Oliver.
But if it has to be done again, I am hoping that they go on cast children as children
not a woman or an early 20s guy in the role of a 14 year old boy. A reliable source just told me they are in talks with Josh Hartnett for Peter. Hope that won't happen

So this is going to sound crazy but can anyone else picture Anna Kendrick as Peter? I'm not sure if she could act it but I think she could certainly sing it well and she's a relatively popular name. I think the really big name should be Captain Hook. I feel like Hugh Jackman could play it well and (this one's really weird) I keep picturing Alec Baldwin. I'm not sure how his singing is but I think he could act the comic and the dark bits well... And Daniel Huttlestone should be in it! either Michael or one of the lost boys depending on what his voice sounds like now.

Why would they cast Josh Hartnett? I actually forgot about him until his name came up in this thread. Now that I looked on IMDB, it says that he's 6'3". That's really tall for what is supposed to be a boy who won't grow up.

Yes, aside from the fact that The Sound of Music is infinitely more popular as a musical than Peter Pan (because of the movie), it had never been on television before. Peter Pan (the musical) has been staged on TV and is readily available on DVD right now. The curiosity factor won't be there.

For that reason alone, Oliver! or Grease would have been a more interesting choice.

And if they do the R&H Cinderella the next year, they'll have the same thing --- something that's already been done on TV multiple times.

What was good about The Sound of Music on TV (and live) was that it hadn't been done before. They pretty much lost their nerve with this choice. What's the risk? (other than making sure the actors aren't hurt while flying)

LOL it was a joke (from my end). But apart it is what I am personally expecting. Someone not appropriate for the role. Would be a chance to increase viewers. maybe!
We will definitely be surprised and I am already looking forward to these boards.

I just had a look at Wikipedia and NBC did telecasts of this same show in 1955, 1956
and 1960 not to mention the Hallmark and Cathy Rigby DVD.

Last night I revisited the cast recording, and a problem that occurred to me about casting is that while Peter is technically supposed to be a boy, this musical was most certainly written as a star vehicle for a woman.

I think that a grown man singing those songs would look ridiculous. Has anyone seen a production of this musical with a boy as Peter Pan?

I actually love the idea of the boy who played Freidrich on THE SOUND OF MUSIC LIVE playing Peter Pan, even though he isn't a bankable star.

We know very well what I meant by stating not appropriate.
That being said, a lot of people on here thought that Carrie Underwood was not
appropriate for Maria, and through the sound of music I became an Underwood fan.
The question still is if 18 million viewers will want to watch a musical based on
a fairy-tale on December 04?

I think if they end up changing their mind and going the female route Jennifer Hudson would give an incredible take that would bring a whole new light to Peter.

And I know this will never happen, but since they insist on having a man play the role, I think Jinx Monsoon would be absolutely BRILLIANT. I guess we'll never know!

I think that casting a man/boy is a way to get enough interest in this program.
Like I stated in my earlier posts this show was done a lot of times before and
by presenting Peter Pan again, there definitely needs to be changes.
This same show is already available on DVD.

Casting a boy to play Peter (even if he is not a bankable star) is a plus, but
like it has been said, this piece was written with a woman in mind, and
how hard it is to find someone to play the role in the shadows of Mary Martin
and Cathy Rigby? They both were fantastic. Unfortunately this was the same
problem with Carrie in the sound of music, since people couldn't help comparing
her to both Martin and Andrews.

But the general public doesn't link Peter Pan with those actresses as much as they link Andrews with the Sound of Music. I mean people weren't saying "That Carrie Underwood Girl could never live up to Mary Martin's Maria Von Trapp in the original production of Sound of Music"

Are they going to be able to erase the wires on live TV? I'm not sure the kids are going to be on board with this when they're used to seeing multi-million dollar special effects in big budget movies.

Also, which version are they going to perform? Certainly not the original "Ugh-A-Wug" lyrics, right?

If they play their cards right, they'll still get good ratings, albeit possibly smaller than TSOM's. All you need is the right Hook.

Mr. Nowak this is EXACTLY what I said the other day. The part IS WRITTEN FOR A WOMAN! Unless they make substantial changes to the book and lyrics, it's gonna be a disaster.
