Holy crap munk where have you been?! You've been missed! re: Time Out New York's Tony Predictions...

I agree, as much as I love N2N, BILLY is a masterpiece as well IMO.

Plimpton has yet to win a Tony.

She's the only featured actress in a musical I missed. While I am sure her performance was wonderful, she has little to no chance of winning. Especially being from a closed show.

Jennifer Ehle won for UTOPIA.

I've said this before. I would love to see Plimpton win. I would love to see Rock of Ages win for sound.

Geoffrey Rush is giving one of the greatest performances I've ever seen, but Raul Esparza deserves the Tony for having to create 4 different performances in 3 months.

Talk about being the best of the worst, a title many are delegating to Karen Olivo, Martha Plimpton really was the best of the worst. She wasn't awful in PAL JOEY but when you're performing against the tone-deaf and warbly Channing and the incredibly mediocre at best Matthew Risch, it's hard to look bad.

She was fine and did "Zip" justice. But she does NOT deserve the title of Best Featured Actress this year.

I'd much rather see any of the other nominees win. She's extremely talented but this role and performance don't do her talents justice and should not be her Tony-winning turn.

I agree, Rocks. Plimpton was the best part of a horrendous production. I still wouldn't give her the Tony, though. I'd make her a distant third on my list of who I'd like to see win that category.

I'd love to know how they come up with those numbers. I can't imagine there is any legitimate way to get those percentages besides total guesswork.

In order of who I'd like to see win: Olivo, Damiano, Gwyne, Shelley, Plimpton.

Definitely.

Billy Elliot is AMAZING, but should never win Best Score over Next to Normal in a million years!

Plimpton deserves it for proving that she can sing and dance and act. Nobody knew she could do the first 2.

I am REALLY hoping 'Hair' wins for direction. I think it REALLY deserves it. I would LOVE to see Will Swenson win as well, but I'm not sure if it will happen.

I'm certainly not going to be turned off by fear of the dirty word 'sweep'. If a show deserves it, it should be rewarded and Billy Elliot deserves it. I completely disagree on the call for featured actress and actor. I think Olivo definitely deserves the award over Gwynne just as Jbara definitely deserves the award over Swenson. Anyone who thinks he's doing nothing but yelling for 2 hrs needs to go back and see it again. It's a beautiful performance and deserves to be recognized.

How does having the weakest score of the season, over the top schmaltz, a weak performance from the supporting male and the unfair advantage of having the lead role (instead of the actors) nominated?

I don't think that Olivia DOESN'T deserve to win, but I would vote for Gwynne over her in a heartbeat.

As much as I loved BILLY ELLIOT and Jbara, I would vote for the little boy, I can't think of his name.

Grrrr
Im a brit who should be rooting for Billy but i really cant

Next To Normal should get Best New Musical, its a smart original and daring musical which paid attention to the critics the 1st time around, fixed its problems and came back stronger than ever.
Its score is electric and its book engaging.

Billy is based on a film and has also been dumbed down for the stage. It screams stereotypes all the way though and has one dimensional characters whos journey is obvious the moment they arrive on stage. The score is average at best with only a few stand out songs. Its book is strong but not as strong as the film and the cast are all great. The set and costumes are wonderful and the choreography is good but not great.

It's such a shame that an obvious crowd pleaser will sweep rather than something that is engaging and has worked its arse off to get the respect and reviews is got.

Just my opinion.

We certainly shouldn't recognize a show that pleases the crowds! Good God! To actually expect someone to spend their money and time on something that's enlightening and entertaining. How low and base can you get?

And goodness only knows that the cast of Billy Elliot is never breaking a sweat and has never drawn a single good review or the respect of a single educated and enlightened soul. You know - like the educated and enlightened people at this web site.

Honestly I'd be happy whichever way the Featured Actress in a Musical category goes, unless Carole Shelley wins for a role that has zero significance to the story and a song that is incredibly obsolete to the plot. Damiano is a bit annoying on the cast recording (haven't seen NEXT TO NORMAL live) but what teenager isn't? So I guess that means she's playing the role right. Olivo may not be any kind of dancer to do the role of Anita full justice, but I think with this role she proved that she's one of the best actresses on the Broadway stage at the moment, her Anita is beautifully acted and incredibly well-sung. Plimptom is one of the best stage actresses of her generation and her nomination in this category proves that there really isn't anything she can't do on stage, plus I've heard nothing but raves about her performance, and anyone who can go from acting a period epic like COAST OF UTOPIA, to getting a Tony nod for a Caryl Churchill play, to stealing the show in a Rodgers and Hart musical probably deserves an award. And Gwynne is simply wonderful in BILLY ELLIOT, I think she really is giving a Tony-worthy performance.

Jbara is excellent in BILLY. His performance is hardly just yelling for three hours...it's a beautifully nuanced performance. "Deep Into the Ground" is absolutely heartbreaking, thanks mainly to his delivery.

God, I couldn't stand Jbara's number during the Christmas party. It should be re-titled "Time to Take a Cigarette or Bathroom Break" though that wouldn't make much sense since it's at the top of Act II. That song brings the whole show to a complete halt (not in a good way) and I really couldn't wait for the number to end. Again, my problem isn't with Jbara, my problem is that I think the role is too one-dimensional to earn anyone any awards. I mean, he's a typical angry straight male during Act I, and *gasp* he has a heart during Act II. Really, those are the only two emotions I got from the part and the only two emotions Jbara needs to emote during that show. That's not award-worthy. As adamgreer said If he wins it'll be because of a sweep and because he's a respected theater actor. Nothing more to that story.
