Tom Wopat - Sondheim on Sondheim

Posted: 9/6/10 at 11:22amIs it me, or does Tom Wopat actually sound really good on the Sondheim on Sondheim recording? His voice usually annoys me, but I really like his interpretations of You Could Drive A Person Crazy and Finishing the Hat among his other numbers...I mean, he's not in the same league as actor-singers like Mandy Patinkin, George Hearn, or the incomparable Norm Lewis, but it was a nice surprise to hear him sounding like this!

Posted: 9/6/10 at 11:44amI just thank God they left his "Epiphany" off of the cd.

Posted: 9/6/10 at 12:35pmI haven't heard the recording yet, but he was definitely the weakest link on stage. His "Epiphany" was embarrassing.

Posted: 9/6/10 at 2:01pmI downloaded only the songs I wanted, and I totally forgot Krizter was in the show. Why didn't they give her a big solo number? The girl has a VOICE!

Posted: 9/6/10 at 2:22pmShe sang "Now You Know" from MERRILY and was spectacular. She should play Mary if the show is ever revived.

I didn't like him on the Annie Get Your Gun recording.
I wish Norm Lewis had sung Epiphany and In Praise of Women. He is clearly the strongest male in the show

Aside from Ragtime, Norm Lewis' Being Alive was the highlight of the 2010 season for me. Probably my favorite performance of the song.
I didn't think Tom Wopat's Epiphany was that bad. I remember being terrified when I saw him rising up over the set with that evil grin.

Posted: 9/7/10 at 12:03amAll I remember is a croaky, straining voice with a periphery of cheesy red colours, and any hint of suspense being interrupted by dialogue/video.

Posted: 9/7/10 at 9:06amI remember really hating the staging of "Epiphany" in the show, but Wopat's performance didn't really bother me at all.

I was lucky that Wopat was out the night I saw it. Lewis Cleale was wonderful.
I find Wopat lackluster on the recording. The only low point. I skip "Finishing the Hat" every time. And his actory shtick choices are quite grating on my nerves.
