Loved the movie, but a missed opportunity for her to play this role and for us to get another musical out of her. Anyone have the skinny on what else she might have coming up?

She has more than a handful of projects coming up, including headlining the rom-com UNDER THE STARS opposite Andy Garcia.

My belief is that Renee was the Miramax golden girl of the time and her casting was pushed by certain producers. I also think Roxie has to have a certain blandness and timidity to contrast with Velma and at least in that clip, Toni doesn’t have that.

I still need her in Night Music

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Is it me or does Toni Collette feel like one of those very talented actors who should often be the 1st choice but ends up being 2nd or 3rd choice due to bad luck, box office recognition etc.? She certainly has had her successes but it feels like she has much more to give. The same way that it is thrilling to watch Nicole in 'Sunset' because it feels like Nicole is Norma, it would be quite haunting to watch Toni Collette as Rose in Gypsy singing "Rose's Turn"...

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I agree about Toni. She's incredibly talented. I can still remember when Muriel's Wedding first came out in Australia in 1994 and how she just captured Muriel so perfectly. I'm not sure how well the movie translated overseas but i still remember starting to cry (and I very rarely cry in movies) when she had the breakdown in the bridal shop as it was just so relatable.

I think she would be quite something in a role like Rose.

Though her “performing” Roxie is well executed it’s quite clear why they passed on her - too strong and commanding for Roxie. She’s more suited for Velma, if anything. And yes, Toni would be a revelation as Rose in GYPSY - both on stage and on film.
