I'm curious - does it cost more for shows NOT nominated for Best Musical to perform?
Also, what are the costs for performing? I assume the performers/musicians/tech crew need to be paid, and that it costs money to build any sets specifically for Radio City Musical Hall. Are there costs beyond that?

YES!
I reallllyyy hope there is a segment or 2 dedicated towards the amazing plays this season. Even just a segment where the 5 best play nominees all act out a very brief scene in costume with a presenter introducing them? Idk what would work, but I really hope there is something.
If Be More Chill performs, they'll probably just do a mix of the opening number and Michael in the Bathroom.
If I hear "It's time to dance" one.more.time. I legit might scream. Then I remember that the rest of the music from The Prom isn't that good either so, that's pretty much what we're gonna get regardless.
To perform on the Tonys, a show has to pay the network, plus cover the cost of the talent/tech/sets, etc. It can easily cost $200,000 or more. Remember when the Deaf West Spring Awakening went to Kickstarter for Tony performance funding?
But CBS loves to have performances on the telecast and I'm sure they would be more than willing to take money from known commodities like King Kong, Pretty Woman, and Beetlejuice whether they are nominated for Best Musical or not.

Thank you! I'm a little confused, though...why do the shows have to pay the *network* to perform? If anything, they're providing more material for the network. (Genuinely curious here!)
I remember back in the early 2000s, the plays would do a short scene on the Tonys. It was probably a logistical nightmare to fit in all the performances, but I liked how it gave me a sense of all the plays that season. (I was a teenager living outside of New York. At least with the Best Musicals I could listen to the cast recordings, but I was out of luck with most of the plays)

I enjoy the score a little more than you do, but God ya please don't do Time To Dance yet again. I don't understand marketing your show with the finale number... but oh well. Idk my guess is Its Not About Me to showcase Beth. I enjoy Tonight Belongs To You tho so might be fun to see that and showcase everyone.
Re: plays, I could see Heidi Schreck doing a short monologue, pending nominations for her and/or the show. I haven't seen the play yet, but that one seems like the kind of thing that could easily work out of context. Especially given what an incredible year this has been for plays... I hope they'll do something to honor them, even if it's an extended clips sizzle.
I do wish there was a way for King Kong to bring the gorilla to Radio City. I know most people are down on that show, but to me it really was an exceptional technical feat, and it'd be cool to show that off! I physically don't think it could happen, though, and it would be a terrible idea to perform something from that show that doesn't involve the puppetry and set design.

It'd be cool if they did a live performance from the Broadway and did a number there. The show could hype it up and sell tickets for $5 maybe to watch the tonys there and see their live performance. I expect a special tony for Kong though, well deserved!
But yes, either quick monologues or extended clips would be fabulous.

I think The Prom’s smartest choice would honestly be Dance With You. It shows a different side of the show and would be great representation, but they’ll probably do Time To Dance for the 1838383th time.
Hadestown will probably do Living It Up/Why We Build The Wall to showcase their likely winners
Tootsie....maybe Unstoppable? We don’t really know what songs they’re marketing.
The one that completely stumps me is Oklahoma. Maybe People Will say We’re In Love? It’s the least radical number, I guess.

Things may have changed, but the last time I read up on this, nominated productions get invitations to perform but still have to pay the cost of the performance of the number. Other productions can request to basically "buy time" on the telecast and CBS likes to be able to promote performances so many often do perform. But you will often see these performances with minimal scenery (i.e.. Idina's performance of "Always Starting Over" on the passerelle at Radio City).
The Tonys are expensive and not a huge ratings grabber for the network, so it has to be worth their while in some way. I suspect this is much of the reason you don't see much from plays on the telecast any more, because (a) they generally have less marketing budget; and (b) musicals are more mass audience-friendly and get preferential treatment. That said, it wouldn't surprise me to see something, even if pre-recorded clips, from this season's play with familiar titles like To Kill a Mockingbird and big stars like Bryan Cranston.

After the Hello Dolly fiasco I can't imagine this ever happening. (Though man, what an absolute middle finger that would be to Rudin if it did...)
And I'm doubling down on my earlier-in-the-thread statement that The Prom needs to do something featuring the Broadway actors, not just the kids. Personally I think they've been missing the mark so much on how they're marketing this. So many people think it's a generic feel-good story about gay kids wanting to go to the prom, which is not the main point at all, and ignores how hilarious the show actually is. Personally I will be so, so disappointed if they do "Time to Dance," "Dance With You," or "Tonight Belongs to Us."

If Oklahomo performs, I'll buy a ticket to the Tony Awards and fly in to NYC. That's not just something you can catch on TV.
